Different roles of urinary light chains and serum light chains as potential biomarkers for monitoring disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus

Jun Jiang et al.

Summary: This study identified significantly elevated levels of light chain proteins in urine samples from patients with active SLE, which increased with disease activity severity. Serum light chains had better discriminatory capacity than urinary light chains, while urine light chains could be used for dynamically monitoring the progress of disease activity.

Summary: Abnormal levels of plasma complement split products and cell-bound complement activation products support complement activation as an important pathogenetic mechanism in SLE and show promise for the diagnosis and monitoring of disease activity.

Human Complement C4B Allotypes and Deficiencies in Selected Cases With Autoimmune Diseases

Danlei Zhou et al.

Summary: Human complement C4 demonstrates a high level of diversity and genetic variation, particularly in relation to autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Through detailed analysis of C4A and C4B proteins, gene copy number variations, and specific mutations, researchers have uncovered key genetic determinants associated with diseases such as type 1 diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus, and encephalitis. These findings provide insights into the complex roles of C4 in immune responses and disease pathogenesis.

Immune-Related Urine Biomarkers for the Diagnosis of Lupus Nephritis

Summary: The kidney is commonly affected in lupus patients, with LN requiring invasive renal biopsies for definitive diagnosis. The use of urine analysis as a non-invasive method for detecting renal disease in LN patients shows promise.

Urinary complement proteins and risk of end-stage renal disease: quantitative urinary proteomics in patients with type 2 diabetes and biopsy-proven diabetic nephropathy

L. Zhao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the association between urinary complement proteins and renal outcome in biopsy-proven diabetic nephropathy. Results showed that the abundance of certain urinary complement proteins correlated with the decline of renal function and progression to end-stage renal disease in diabetic patients, suggesting that therapeutic targeting of the complement pathway may help alleviate the progression of diabetic nephropathy.

Alternative complement pathway activation in thrombotic microangiopathy associated with lupus nephritis

Juan M. Mejia-Vilet et al.

Summary: Thrombotic microangiopathy in systemic lupus erythematosus is associated with complement system activation. The study compared complement activation products in plasma and urine between patients with active lupus nephritis and those with acute TMA plus concomitant active LN. Results showed increased circulating complement fragments C3a, Ba, and C5bC9 in both groups, with higher levels in urine in aTMA+aLN patients. After treatment, levels of circulating complement components increased in aTMA+aLN patients, while levels in urine decreased. These changes were consistent in multiple TMA episodes in some patients.
