MHD hybrid nanofluid convection and phase change process in an L-shaped vented cavity equipped with an inner rotating cylinder and PCM-packed bed system

Hana Ouri et al.

Summary: In this study, convective heat transfer and phase change process in an L-shaped vented cavity with an inner rotating cylinder and phase change material-packed bed (PCM-PB) system under a magnetic field were analyzed. Numerical simulations were conducted for different Reynolds numbers, rotational Reynolds numbers, cylinder sizes, and Hartmann numbers, with a 2% loading amount of hybrid Ag/MgO nanoparticles in water. The results showed that the vortex size and distribution could be controlled by varying the rotating cylinder size, rotational speed, and magnetic field. A larger cylinder size accelerated the phase change process, leading to a reduction of about 22% in the complete phase transition time and an increase of about 86% in the average Nusselt number at a rotational Reynolds number of -1000. The rotational direction of the cylinder had an impact on the phase transition dynamics, with a 27% increase in the complete phase transition time compared to the non-rotating cylinder case at a rotational Reynolds number of -1000. The magnetic field strength effectively suppressed the vortex, resulting in a faster phase change and a 26.5% increase in the average Nusselt number at a rotational Reynolds number of -1000. ANFIS-based modeling was used to investigate the effects of the rotating cylinder on the phase change dynamics in the L-shaped vented cavity.

Experimental study on the thermophysical properties, heat transfer, thermal entropy generation and exergy efficiency of turbulent flow of ZrO2-water nanofluids

L. Syam Sundar

Summary: This experimental study investigates the thermophysical properties, heat transfer coefficient, thermal entropy generation, frictional entropy generation, and exergy efficiency of ZrO2/DI-water nanofluids circulating through a tube under turbulent flow. The results show that at a 1.0% vol. loading of nanofluid, the thermal conductivity increases by 24.96% at 60 degrees C, while the viscosity increases by 45.57% at 20 degrees C compared to the base fluid. Additionally, the heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number of the 1.0% vol. nanofluid increase by 46.30% and 31.65% respectively, with a penalty in friction factor of 19.21% and pumping power penalty of 13.91% at a Reynolds number of 14575, compared to water. The thermal entropy generation is reduced by 31.65% and the frictional entropy generation is increased by 19.2% at the 1.0% vol. nanofluid and Reynolds number of 14575. The exergy efficiency is also enhanced by 24.42% at the 1.0% vol. and Reynolds number of 14575. Overall, the thermal performance factor of ZrO2 nanofluids is 1.242 times larger than that of water, indicating their beneficial heat transfer properties.

Entropy generation analysis and simulation of turbulent forced convection around tube with integral wake splitter using artificial neural network approach

Moustafa A. El Bouz et al.

Summary: This study investigates entropy generation characteristics around a circular plain tube with integral downstream splitter plates in a rectangular duct. The results show that the addition of the plate reduces entropy generation, with the entropy generation number being more sensitive to the Reynolds number as plate length increases. The use of the artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm provides accurate predictions for entropy generation without the need for extra experiments or solving nonlinear mathematical models.
