The encapsulation of lycopene with ?-lactalbumin nanotubes to enhance their anti-oxidant activity, viscosity and colloidal stability in dairy drink

Ruxin Chang et al.

Summary: "Nano-encapsulation using food-sourced protein nanotubes (NTs) from self-assembled partially hydrolyzed alpha-lactalbumin (alpha-lac) has shown promise in improving the stability and biological activity of bioactive compounds. Lycopene (LYC) loaded into the hydrophobic inner wall of NTs exhibited improved antioxidant properties and stability against temperature and UV light. The NTs also enhanced the colloidal stability of LYC and could be successfully incorporated into dairy drinks for increased viscosity and long-term stability."

Anti-cancer activity of sustained release capsaicin formulations

Justin C. Merritt et al.

Summary: Capsaicin, a phytochemical found in chili peppers, exhibits potent anti-cancer activity. However, its clinical application is hindered by poor bioavailability, aqueous solubility, and adverse side effects. Encapsulation of capsaicin in sustained release drug delivery systems can overcome these challenges, leading to improved solubility, stability, bioavailability, and reduced side effects. These capsaicin-based formulations have the potential to serve as novel chemotherapies, diagnostic imaging probes, and chemosensitization agents for human cancers.

Carlos Henrique Zanini Martins et al.

Summary: Water remediation is a significant challenge in environmental science and technology. This study demonstrates the functionalization of carbon nanotubes with bovine plasma for the removal of copper ions and mitigation of ecotoxicity. The functionalized nanotubes showed improved dispersion stability and enhanced copper ion removal compared to oxidized nanotubes. Importantly, the functionalized nanotubes did not exhibit acute toxicity to Daphnia similis and mitigated copper toxicity in co-exposure assays.

A nanobody toolbox targeting dimeric coiled-coil modules for functionalization of designed protein origami structures

Andreja Majerle et al.

Summary: The study discusses the use of single-chain camelid antibodies to target various CC modules in protein origami designs, showing that these nanobodies can recognize the same CC modules in different polyhedral contexts. This expands the versatility of protein origami scaffolds, allowing for functionalization of polyhedra with nanobodies in desired stoichiometry. Crystal structures and small-angle X-ray scattering reveal binding interactions between nanobodies and CC dimers in designed protein structures, providing opportunities for functionalizing CC protein origami polyhedra or bionanomaterials.

Location-Dependent Lanthanide Selectivity Engineered into Structurally Characterized Designed Coiled Coils

Louise N. Slope et al.

Summary: This report highlights the unprecedented phenomenon of location-dependent and size-selective binding to lanthanide sites within miniature protein coiled coil scaffolds. The engineered binding sites show unusual selectivity for moderately large Ln(3+) ions, and it is demonstrated that this selectivity can be programmed into the sequence and manipulated by shifting the binding site. Experimental data, including X-ray crystal structures and CD studies, provide insights into the optimal radius of binding sites within the coiled coil scaffold, contributing to a better understanding of location-dependent metal selectivity in protein structures.

Structural insights into kinetoplastid coronin oligomerization domain and F-actin interaction

Pankaj Singh Parihar et al.

Summary: The study found that the asymmetric structures of the coronin protein are essential for eukaryotes, particularly kinetoplastids, and are of interest in understanding and exploiting actin dynamics. The conserved N-terminal beta-propeller domain is involved in protein: protein interactions, while the C-terminal coiled-coil domain mediates oligomerization, transducing conformational changes. The elucidated structure possesses a similar topology and assembly while comparative structural analysis shows that the T.brucei coronin coiled-coil domain too possesses the asymmetry, though its magnitude is smaller.
