Enhancing biocompatibility of PCL/PU nano-structures to control the water wettability by NaOH hydrolysis treatment for tissue engineering applications

Nafiseh Jirofti et al.

Summary: The present study focused on fabricating and hydrolyzing Poly (epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL)/Polyurethane (PU) nano-structures using aqueous sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in order to modify their surface properties and hydrophilicity. The study found that hydrolyzed PCL75%:PU25% hybrid nano-structures showed the most promising mechanical properties and optimum surface modification for tissue engineering applications.

Melt electrowriting of PLA, PCL, and composite PLA/PCL scaffolds for tissue engineering application

Mohammad Shahverdi et al.

Summary: The fabrication of well-ordered and bio-mimetic scaffolds is a crucial area of research in tissue engineering. The use of the MEW technique to fabricate scaffolds is gaining attention due to its combination of additive manufacturing and electrohydrodynamic principles. While PCL has been widely used in MEW process, it has mechanical limitations for bone tissue engineering. This study aims to address these issues by fabricating three different types of well-ordered scaffolds using an MEW device, including a PLA/PCL composite scaffold. The composite scaffold shows superior mechanical properties and cell-scaffold interactions compared to neat PLA and PCL scaffolds, making it a promising candidate for heart tissue engineering applications.

Design of Biopolymer-Based Interstitial Therapies for the Treatment of Glioblastoma

Erik S. Pena et al.

Summary: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common form of primary brain cancer with poor prognosis, and interstitial therapy offers a promising approach for improving survival rates. By utilizing polymer implants to release drugs locally at the site of resection, interstitial therapy can bypass the blood-brain barrier, reduce systemic toxicity, and optimize combination therapy.
