Scavenging of bacteria or bacterial products by magnetic particles functionalized with a broad-spectrum pathogen recognition receptor motif offers diagnostic and therapeutic applications

Bernhard Friedrich et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an efficient strategy for the clearance of bacterial pathogens in bloodstream infections using magnetic particles conjugated with specific peptides, resulting in reduced cytokine release. The approach shows good compatibility with cells and blood, without interfering with host structures. It also has the potential to shorten diagnostic times for bloodstream infections and accelerate targeted antibiotic therapy.

Loco-regional radiosensitizing nanoparticles-in-gel augments head and neck cancer chemoradiotherapy

Prateek Bhardwaj et al.

Summary: This study developed a dual nanocarrier hydrogel for site-specific delivery of radio sensitizers in the treatment of locally advanced unresectable head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The hydrogel improved drug accumulation in the tumor and reduced systemic absorption, leading to enhanced therapeutic efficacy and safety compared to commercial formulations. The nanoparticles in the hydrogel also facilitated intracellular uptake of radiosensitizers and enhanced radiation-induced DNA damage and cell apoptosis.

Therapeutic Advancements in Metal and Metal Oxide Nanoparticle-Based Radiosensitization for Head and Neck Cancer Therapy

Poornima Dubey et al.

Summary: Radiation therapy is a primary treatment for head and neck cancer, but innovative approaches are needed to improve treatment outcomes. Metal and metal oxide nanoparticles can be used as radiosensitizers to overcome the challenges of radiation therapy. This review discusses the current research and therapeutic efficacy of metal nanoparticles, such as gold, gadolinium, and silver nanoparticles, as well as metal oxide nanoparticles, such as hafnium, zinc, and iron nanoparticles, in the treatment of head and neck cancer.

Formulation of simvastatin within high density lipoprotein enables potent tumour radiosensitisation

Pouya Dehghankelishadi et al.

Summary: This study developed a nanoparticle formulation of simvastatin, which enhanced the radiobiological response in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma models. The formulation achieved this by improving cellular uptake and utilizing the biological activity of high density lipoprotein nanoparticles. The radiosensitizing potency of the formulation was also validated in a mouse model.

Critical Offset Magnetic PArticle SpectroScopy for rapid and highly sensitive medical point-of-care diagnostics

Patrick Vogel et al.

Summary: The authors present a magnetic particle spectroscopy method called COMPASS, which offers a rapid and cost-effective solution for antibody detection. This technique demonstrates comparable sensitivity to ELISA but with a much shorter measurement time. COMPASS has the potential to be a flexible and robust alternative to current methods such as ELISA and flow cytometry.

Effect of Citrate- and Gold-Stabilized Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles on Head and Neck Tumor Cell Lines during Combination Therapy with Ionizing Radiation

Christoph Schreiber et al.

Summary: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a prevalent cancer associated with alcohol, tobacco, and HPV. Nanoparticles, including citrate-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Citrate-SPIONs) and gold-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Au-SPIONs), are being explored for their potential therapeutic uses. This study investigated the effects of these nanoparticles in combination with ionizing irradiation (IR) on HPV positive and negative HNSCC cell lines, as well as healthy fibroblasts and keratinocytes. The results showed that the cytotoxic effects of the nanoparticles, when combined with IR, varied depending on the type of nanoparticles, the dosage, and the cell type, but were not influenced by the HPV status.
