Influences of Al2O3 content on crystallization and physical properties of LAS glass-ceramics prepared from spodumene

Zhiqiang Zhou et al.

Summary: Low thermal expansion Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 transparent glass-ceramics with low Li2O content and relatively high total content of Na2O and K2O were prepared from spodumene, and the effects of Al2O3 addition on their structure and properties were investigated. The addition of Al2O3 promoted the precipitation and transition of 8-quartz solid solution, resulting in smaller grain sizes and higher visible transmittance in the glass-ceramics. Samples with 21.00 wt.% Al2O3 content crystallized at 860 degrees Celsius exhibited the best mechanical properties among all tested samples.

Effect of ZnO on the structural, physio-mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance of Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 glass-ceramics

Husniyah Aliyah Lutpi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different zinc oxide-magnesium oxide (ZnO-MgO) contents on the thermal shock resistance properties of lithium aluminosilicate (LAS) glass-ceramics. The addition of ZnO improved the physio-mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance of LAS glass-ceramics. LAS glass-ceramics with 1.45 wt% ZnO demonstrated excellent performance for rapid high-temperature change applications, with high density, low porosity, high flexural strength, and low coefficient of thermal expansion.

Cerium oxide containing canasite based glass-ceramics for dental applications: Crystallization behavior, mechanical and chemical properties

Zahra Shamohammadi Ghahsareh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of CeO2 on the crystallization behavior, microstructural features, and mechanical and chemical properties of canasite glass-ceramics for dental applications. The results show that the addition of CeO2 slightly increases the crystallization temperatures and significantly decreases the thermal expansion coefficients of the starting glasses. Raman spectroscopy results confirm that CeO2 enhances the network connectivity of the glasses. The presence of CeO2 favors the crystallization of miserite, calcium fluoride, and canasite crystalline phases. Canasite crystals exhibit an inter-locked blade-like morphology while miserite crystals have a cubic-like morphology. Base-C-2 demonstrates the highest chemical durability and acceptable mechanical properties as a restorative dental material.

Study on Crystallization Process of Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 Glass-Ceramics Based on In Situ Analysis

Minghan Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 glass crystallization process was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD), and confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM). It was found that the precipitation mechanism of the crystals is whole crystallization. The results provide guidance for selecting crystallization heat treatment systems.

Hui Zhang et al.

Summary: Li2Si2O5 rods were successfully synthesized and used to strengthen and toughen glass-ceramics, resulting in high flexural strength and toughness. The microstructure features a densely stagger network formed by the rods and smaller crystals in the glass matrix, contributing to the improvement of mechanical properties.

Microstructure and ion-exchange properties of glass-ceramics containing ZnAl2O4 and β-quartz solid solution nanocrystals

Yunlan Guo et al.

Summary: The crystallization of glass has a significant impact on the microstructure and ion-exchange properties of transparent glass-ceramics. Through sequential crystallization of ZnAl2O4 and beta-quartz solid solution nanocrystals, the glass-ceramics show smaller grain size, more uniform structure, and higher transparency. The ion-exchange depth increases significantly after crystallization, as the content of zinc and five coordinated aluminum in the residual glass matrix decreases.
