Catalysts with single metal atoms for the hydrogen production from formic acid

Dmitri A. Bulushev et al.

Summary: Formic acid can be used as a hydrogen donor in hydrogen production and transfer reactions catalyzed by metal and metal-complex catalysts. This review highlights the potential of heterogeneous catalysts with single metal atoms stabilized by pyridinic nitrogen atoms on the edge or vacancy sites of graphene sheets. Understanding the nature and coordination of single-atom active sites is crucial for enhancing the performance of catalysts in these reactions, with the aim of developing novel and efficient catalysts.

Dynamic Activation of Adsorbed Intermediates via Axial Traction for the Promoted Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Xinyue Wang et al.

Summary: An axial traction strategy was developed to optimize the electronic structure of the M-N-4 moiety, leading to atomically dispersed nickel sites coordinated with four nitrogen atoms and one axial oxygen atom embedded within the carbon matrix (Ni-N-4-O/C). This Ni-N-4-O/C electrocatalyst exhibited excellent CO2RR performance with a high CO Faradic efficiency close to 100% at -0.9 V, maintaining the CO FE above 90% in a wide potential window. The superior CO2RR activity is attributed to the axial traction effect induced by the Ni-N-4-O active moiety.

Ni-N4 sites in a single-atom Ni catalyst on N-doped carbon for hydrogen production from formic acid

Dmitri A. Bulushev et al.

Summary: The study synthesized single-atom 1 wt% Ni catalysts for hydrogen production from formic acid through simple impregnation, and elucidated the nature of the Ni site and proposed a reaction mechanism. The catalytic activities of single-atom and traditional catalysts were similar, with the mechanism involving participation of Ni and N atoms in formate formation and a highest energy barrier of 1.088 eV for the recombination of hydrogen atoms.

Porosity and composition of nitrogen-doped carbon materials templated by the thermolysis products of calcium tartrate and their performance in electrochemical capacitors

Alina D. Nishchakova et al.

Summary: Porous nitrogen-doped carbon materials were synthesized using template nanoparticles produced by the decomposition of calcium tartrate in thermal shock conditions. Increasing the synthesis temperature led to more ordered graphitic layers but decreased specific surface area and total pore volume. The material synthesized at 750 degrees Celsius showed the best electrochemical performance due to the presence of pyridinic nitrogen, graphitic nitrogen, and large-size mesopores.
