The Atomic Drill Bit: Precision Controlled Atomic Fabrication of 2D Materials

Matthew G. Boebinger et al.

Summary: An automated and feedback-controlled atomic fabrication method is developed to create 1D-2D heterostructures in MoS2 with atomic precision. The shape and symmetry of the scanning pathway can be controlled using an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope. Density functional theory calculations and ab initio molecular dynamic simulations are used to study the energetic barriers for atomic edge structures and transformation pathways. This work provides an automated method for understanding atomic-scale transformations and enables more precise atomic-scale engineering of materials.

Synthesis of a mesoporous Mg-Al-mixed metal oxide with P123 template for effective removal of Congo red via aggregation-driven adsorption

Jing Xie et al.

Summary: Effective adsorption of Congo red was achieved with mesoporous Mg-Al mixed metal oxide (MMO), particularly with MMO-W showing higher adsorption capacity compared to MMO-E. The uniform interparticle mesopores of MMO-W facilitated the adsorption of Congo red through intermolecular aggregation in the pore. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second order kinetics, indicating strong interactions between Congo red and both mixed metal oxides.

Synthesis and Structural Analysis of Ternary Ca-Al-Fe Layered Double Hydroxides with Different Iron Contents

Jing Xie et al.

Summary: Hydrocalumite structured layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with various Fe3+ ratios were prepared through a coprecipitation method, with the Fe3+ content controlled by applying Al3+; X-ray diffraction pattern showed only specific Ca/Fe ratios resulted in LDH formation; ternary LDHs with Ca-Al-Fe composition were successfully synthesized by controlling the Fe3+ content with Al, with Al increasing crystallinity. UV-vis and X-ray absorption spectroscopies revealed slight local distortion in coordination induced by Al but overall crystal stabilization in the LDH structure.

Conversion of bile salts from inferior emulsifier to efficient smart emulsifier assisted by negatively charged nanoparticles at low concentrations

Haojie Zhang et al.

Summary: By combining with negatively charged particles, bile salts with poor emulsifying ability can be transformed into highly efficient emulsifiers, which can synergistically co-stabilize oil-in-water emulsions at extremely low concentrations and be reversibly switched between stable and unstable triggered by CO2/N-2 at room temperature. This strategy is applicable to emulsions containing different oils and bile salts, offering a generic model for various bile salts with different molecular structures in extending their applications in more technical fields.
