Hydrothermal synthesis and Ta doping of TiO2 nanorods: Effect of soaking time and doping on optical and charge transfer properties for enhanced SERS activity

Samriti et al.

Summary: This work presents an alkali hydrothermal synthesis method for the fabrication of TiO2 nanorods (NRs) and Ta doped TiO2 NRs, which exhibit enhanced optical and charge transfer properties. The soaking treatment after synthesis plays a crucial role in the formation and performance enhancement of the nanorods. The results showed that the optimized soaking time in HCl solution led to the production of highly uniform and crystalline TiO2 NRs with a band gap of 2.95 eV. Similarly, Ta doped TiO2 NRs with a band gap of 2.58 eV were obtained. The SERS activity of both undoped and Ta doped TiO2 NRs was significantly enhanced compared to TiO2 nanopowder, due to the formation of surface/lattice defects and abundant energy levels.
