Multielement Imaging Reveals the Diagenetic Features and Varied Water Redox Conditions of a Lacustrine Dolomite Nodule

Yuke Liu et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors reported the multielement imaging results of a lacustrine dolomite nodule from the Songliao Basin in China and revealed the variation of bottom water redox condition during the formation of dolomite through the analysis of elemental distributions.

Tracing forming mechanism of the sparry calcite growth in the lacustrine shale of east China: A glimpse into the role of organic matter in calcite transformation

Danish Khan et al.

Summary: The formation of sparry calcite is common in fine-grained sedimentary rocks worldwide. In the studied shale, sparry calcite is formed at deep depths and in organic-rich intervals. Organic matter, microfractures, and elastic deformation play important roles in the formation and maturation of sparry calcite.

Isotope evidence for he coupled iron and carbon cycles 1.4 billion years ago

H. J. Wang et al.

Summary: This study reports the contents and isotopic compositions of Fe and C from the Xiamaling siderite deposits in North China, which are approximately 1.4 Ga old. A genetic model is introduced to explain the dynamic and coupled Fe and C cycles in Mesoproterozoic oceans and sediments. The study suggests that hydrothermal fluid played a crucial role in the deposition of the Xiamaling siderite deposits.

Methanogen microfossils and methanogenesis in Permian lake deposits

Funing Sun et al.

Summary: This study reports a new population of spheroidal microstructures composed of dolomite in Permian lake deposits in northwestern China, interpreted as fossilized cells of methanogenic archaea. The microfossil-bearing dolomite exhibits extremely positive delta C-13 values attributed to microbial methanogenesis, suggesting that methanogens were a significant component of the Permian lake biosphere and produced a large amount of biogenic methane through methanogenesis in anoxic lake sediments. This study not only fills a gap in the fossil record of methanogenic archaea, but also provides new insights into methane emissions from ancient lakes.

An evaluation of cleaning methods, preservation and specimen stages on trace elements in modern shallow marine ostracod shells of Sinocytheridea impressa and their implications as proxies

Maximiliano Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the potential utility of trace elements in shallow marine ostracod Sinocytheridea impressa, with results suggesting that Mg, Sr, and Mn could serve as suitable proxies for important environmental variables. Cleaning tests revealed that the use of sodium hypochlorite effectively removed contaminants adhered to the shells.

Multi-Element Imaging of a 1.4 Ga Authigenic Siderite Crystal

Huajian Wang et al.

Summary: Iron formations dominated by siderite have been found to occur within the time interval of 1.8-0.8 Ga, with studies on siderite crystals from the Xiamaling IF revealing details about their crystallization and growth processes. The formation of these siderite-dominated IFs is believed to be related to vigorous dissimilatory iron reduction providing key components for their formation.

Upper Campanian-lower Maastrichtian integrated carbon isotope stratigraphy and calcareous microplankton biostratigraphy of North-central Tunisia

Sherif Farouk et al.

Summary: A comprehensive stratigraphic framework for the upper Campanian-lower Maastrichtian succession in the Elles section of North-central Tunisia is presented, using an integrated approach of calcareous nannofossil and planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy along with carbon isotope stratigraphy. Seven delta C-13 events were identified for global correlation, with assessments made on the isochroneity and diachroneity of microplankton bioevents in relation to carbon isotope stratigraphy. The Campanian/Maastrichtian boundary was precisely positioned within the El Haria Formation at the base of delta C-13 event CMBc, providing important insights into the stratigraphic and biostratigraphic relationships in the studied interval.
