XPS, FTIR, DSC and optical absorption investigations on 55B2O3-20ZnO (25-x)Li2O-xBi2O3 (0≤x≤25 mol%) glass system

J. Hema Madhuri et al.

Summary: Melt quenching was used to synthesize a glass system with the composition of 55B(2)O(3)-20ZnO-(25-x)Li2O-xBi(2)O(3) (0 <= x <= 25 mol%). The structural, thermal, and optical properties of the glasses were investigated using XRD, FTIR, DSC, EDX, XPS, and optical absorption studies. The results confirmed the non-crystalline nature of the glasses and revealed the presence of all constituent ions. The variations in thermal and optical properties were correlated with the structural changes caused by Bi2O3. The high thermal stability of BZLBi3 glass could be beneficial for fiber drawing applications.

In-situ remediation of phosphogypsum in a cement-free pathway: Utilization of ground granulated blast furnace slag and NaOH pretreatment

Qiusong Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a combination of NaOH pretreatment and ground-granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) additives was used to solidify phosphogypsum (PG) for cemented paste backfill (CPB) with a lower carbon footprint. The NaOH pretreatment effectively removed approximately 95% of F within the PG, resulting in more hydration products and effective F and P retention candidates. The addition of GGBFS promoted the generation of additional cement hydrates. The macro mechanical performance analysis showed that the mixtures of pretreated-PG-GGBFS exhibited excellent mechanical performance. Elemental mapping and toxicity characteristic leaching procedures demonstrated competitive F and P immobilization ability compared to typical OPC binder and individual GGBFS addition. This study opens up new perspectives for synergistic recycling of PG and GGBFS in a profitable and low carbon footprint way.

Hydration and Mechanical Properties of Blended Cement with Copper Slag Pretreated by Thermochemical Modification

Daolin Wang et al.

Summary: In this paper, reconstituted granulated copper slag (RGCS) was obtained by adding alumina oxide (Al2O3) to liquid copper slag, and blended cement pastes were formulated by a partial substitute for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with the RGCS. The addition of Al2O3 increased the magnetite precipitation in RGCS and improved its pozzolanic activity. The blended cement pastes with Al2O3 added to RGCS showed higher exothermic rate, cumulative heat release, and unconfined compressive strength than other blended cement mortars. The pozzolanic activity of RGCS was enhanced with the increase in Al2O3 addition, resulting in a more compact microstructure with fewer pores.

Hydration development of blended cement paste with granulated copper slag modified with CaO and Al2O3

Qinli Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduces an approach to enhance the reactivity of granulated copper slag (GCS) by modifying its mineral structure using calcium oxide (CaO) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) in a molten state. The addition of CaO and Al2O3 in GCS improves its pozzolanic activity, leading to increased hydration heat emission rate and compressive strength of blended cement paste. XRD and SEM-EDS analysis indicates that the modified GCS consumes more calcium hydroxide (CH) and generates more calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gels, forming a more compact structure with fewer pores. The leaching of heavy metals from the modified GCS is lower than the environmental standards. Therefore, the modified GCS can be used as a sustainable material to promote cleaner production for cement and concrete industries.

The carbon uptake and mechanical property of cemented paste backfill carbonation curing for low concentration of CO2

Qiusong Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the carbon-uptake characteristics and mechanical property of CPB in underground mined-out stopes. The results showed that the carbonation rate increased significantly with carbonation curing, and each ton of CPB could absorb about 78.4 kg CO2. CC affected the strength development and improved the pore structure of CPB.

Highly-efficient fluoride retention in on-site solidification/stabilization of phosphogypsum: Cemented paste backfill synergizes with poly-aluminum chloride activation

Qiusong Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC) was added to the binder of phosphogypsum (PG) to promote cement hydration reaction and optimize the porosity and mechanical properties of specimens. PAC also played a role in the immobilization of fluoride. Therefore, PAC-augmented binders can ensure efficient fluoride retention in a technically feasible and financially profitable method.

Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy Insight on Free Volume Conversion of Nanostructured MgAl2O4 Ceramics

Halyna Klym et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) method for investigating free volume changes in functional ceramic materials, using nanostructured MgAl2O4 spinel as a case study. The analysis shows that technological modifications can lead to volume shrinking and decrease in defect-related voids in ceramics with well-developed porosity. The approach presented here can be applied to a wide range of functional nanomaterials with pronounced porosity.
