A re-evaluation of the Meso-Cenozoic thermo-tectonic evolution of Bogda Shan (Tian Shan, NW China) based on new basement and detrital apatite fission track thermochronology

Zhiyuan He et al.

Summary: This study re-evaluates the thermo-tectonic evolution of the Bogda Shan mountain range using apatite fission track thermochronology. The results suggest slow to moderate basement cooling during the early Mesozoic, explaining the preservation of low-relief Mesozoic erosion surfaces. In addition, partial resetting of the apatite fission track system during the Cretaceous and coincident ages with exhumation pulses in the Chinese North Tianshan were observed. Based on a comprehensive summary of published data, the authors argue for a Mesozoic building of the Bogda-Balikun-Harlik mountain chain and relatively modest Cenozoic exhumation.

Meso-Cenozoic thermo-tectonic evolution of the Yili block within the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (NW China): Insights from apatite fission track thermochronology

Zhiyuan He et al.

Summary: This study presents new apatite fission track (AFT) data from the northern and southern margins of the Yili block, and explores its thermo-tectonic history. The results indicate that the northern and southern parts of the Yili block experienced different Mesozoic thermo-tectonic evolution, with the northern part undergoing basement cooling before the Cretaceous. The study suggests that the intra-continental reactivation of the North Tianshan and Nalati faults did not lead to significant regional exhumation during the Meso-Cenozoic.

Mesozoic building of the Eastern Tianshan and East Junggar (NW China) revealed by low-temperature thermochronology

Zhiyuan He et al.

Summary: The Eastern Tianshan and East Junggar regions underwent moderate to rapid basement cooling during the Cretaceous, likely due to far-field effects of accretion and collision along the south Eurasia margin. The East Junggar experienced cooling events from the late Permian to Early Jurassic, possibly related to post-orogenic transpression along major faults and distal effects of the Qiangtang-Eurasia collision. Combined with existing evidence, it is suggested that there was no significant exhumation in the Eastern Tianshan and East Junggar during the Cenozoic.

Late Cenozoic topographic growth of the South Tianshan Mountain Range: Insights from detrital apatite fission-track ages, northern Tarim Basin margin, NW China

Chao Guo et al.

Summary: The Cenozoic deformation of the Tianshan Mountain Range and its impact on the Tarim Basin's exhumation and topographic growth are investigated in this study through the analysis of detrital apatite fission-track ages. The results show major age-shifts at -23 Ma and -10 Ma, suggesting drainage reorganizations associated with the uplift of the South Tianshan Mountain Range. The progressive topographic growth of the range is found to have influenced the aridification of the Tarim region.

Cenozoic multi-phase intracontinental deformation of the Tianshan Range (NW China): Constraints from detrital zircon provenance and syn-tectonic sedimentation of the Kuqa Depression

Xiang Qin et al.

Summary: Influenced by the India-Eurasia collision, the Tianshan Range and Kuqa Depression underwent multiple phases of intracontinental tectonic activation. The sediments in the Kuqa Depression recorded the basin-mountain coupling process. This study conducted detailed structural investigations, stratigraphic analysis, and detrital zircon U-Pb dating to reconstruct the uplift history of the South Tianshan Range. The results indicate that the deformation and uplift of the Tianshan Range were initiated in the Early Eocene and continued throughout the Cenozoic.

Final closure of the Paleo Asian Ocean basin in the early Triassic

Zhou Tan et al.

Summary: The timing of the final welding of the southern Altaids to construct Pangea is uncertain, leading to debate about the configuration of northeast Pangea and the reconstruction of proto-Asia. Analysis of sediments in a fore-arc accretionary basin in the South Tianshan Orogenic Belt reveals that they have a maximum depositional age in the early Triassic and originate from the distal East Tianshan Arc region.

Signatures of tectonic-climatic interaction during the Late Cenozoic orogenesis along the northern Chinese Tian Shan

Xudong Zhao et al.

Summary: The study confirms tectonic uplift around 7.0 Ma and reveals that sediments in the basin mainly originated from glacier-covered ridge-crest regions during 3.3-2.5 Ma. Late-Pliocene to Early Pleistocene sedimentation was likely a response to the onset of the northern hemispheric glaciation, showing the tectonic-climatic interaction during the Late Cenozoic orogenesis in the northern Chinese Tian Shan.

Exhumation and Preservation of Paleozoic Porphyry Cu Deposits: Insights from the Yandong Deposit, Southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt

Lin Gong et al.

Summary: Porphyry copper deposits in the Paleozoic era are less common, but some large ones are preserved worldwide, especially in the Central Asian orogenic belt. The study of the Yandong porphyry copper deposit in the Carboniferous era reveals at least two cooling episodes and the key factors contributing to its preservation, such as tectonic quiescence and postmineralization burial. Anomalously old apatite fission track ages integrated with age-elevation relationships can provide insights for mineral exploration strategies in the Chinese Tianshan orogens.
