Emergence of colistin resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae ST15 disseminating bla KPC-2 in a novel genetic platform

Veronica E. Alvarez et al.

Summary: This study analyzed an extensively drug-resistant colistin- and carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CCR-Kp) isolate from Argentina using whole-genome sequencing, genomic and phylogenetic analysis, and conjugation assays. The isolate belonged to sequence type 15 (ST15) and carried multiple transferable antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), including blaKPC-2. The study highlights the complex and diverse lateral gene transfer mechanisms influencing the epidemiology of KPC.

Carbapenemase-Producing Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli From Argentina: Clonal Diversity and Predominance of Hyperepidemic Clones CC10 and CC131

Maria Belen Sanz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution and molecular epidemiology of carbapenemase-producing ExPEC in Argentina. The study found a high clonal diversity with CC10 and CC/ST131 being the most common clones. Other international clones were also identified. Further studies are needed to determine the plasmid families responsible for spreading carbapenemases in this region.

Chicken-sourceEscherichia coliwithin phylogroup F shares virulence genotypes and is closely related to extraintestinal pathogenicE. colicausing human infections

Xiangkai Zhuge et al.

Summary: Chicken-source E. coli isolates within phylogroup F in China showed high prevalence of virulence-related genes, stable population structure, and strong biofilm formation, swimming, and swarming abilities. The research revealed the potential zoonotic transmission and association with human ExPEC pathotypes, indicating a potential high-risk food-borne pathogen.

Global molecular epidemiology of carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli (2002-2017)

Brian D. Johnston et al.

Summary: The study characterized a globally distributed collection of carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli isolates and identified diverse molecular traits and antibiotic resistance patterns among different geographical regions. The global population of CR E. coli is highly diverse and varies significantly by geographical region, presenting challenges for prevention and management that require ongoing surveillance.

Genomic data reveals the emergence of an IncQ1 small plasmid carrying blaKPC-2 in Escherichia coli of the pandemic sequence type 648

Bruna Fuga et al.

Summary: The study sequenced the genome of a carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli strain, revealing a high-level phylogenetic relationship and a wide resistome with the USA and international Glade 2. Additionally, the emergence of a small plasmid carrying carbapenemase and other genes in the pandemic clone signifies rapid adaptation and global distribution of these small plasmids to new bacterial hosts.
