Advances in enhanced oil recovery technologies for low permeability reservoirs

Wan-Li Kang et al.

Summary: Low permeability oil and gas resources have great potential worldwide and have become the main focus of oil and gas development. Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technologies have been developed to further improve crude oil production in low permeability reservoirs. This study provides a comprehensive review of EOR technologies and discusses the technical challenges, directions, and outlooks of EOR in low permeability reservoirs.

CO2 Mobility Control in Porous Media by Using Armored Bubbles with Silica Nanoparticles

Qichao Lv et al.

Summary: The study explored the use of silica nanoparticles for CO2 mobility control in porous media, resulting in the development of armored bubbles. The nanoparticles adsorbed on the bubble interface formed an armor layer, increasing the bubble dispersions' effective viscosity and shear-thinning property. Armored bubbles showed high rigidity and plugging ability, enhancing oil recovery by trapping CO2 in porous media and displacing residual oils more thoroughly than traditional methods. Ultimately, the use of armored bubbles improved oil recovery efficiency by about 11.4% in homogeneous porous media and 14.3% in heterogeneous porous media, demonstrating their high performance for EOR.

The Quality of Emulsions with New Synthetized Lipids Stabilized by Xanthan Gum

Malgorzata Kowalska et al.

Summary: This study investigated the quality of emulsions containing rabbit fat modified with vegetable oil. Emulsions formed with modified fats were found to have higher consistency and skin hydration, as well as higher consumer acceptance. This research highlights the importance of sensory determinations in developing new emulsion products and the potential use of waste fats as new fatty bases.

Thermo- and CO2-triggered viscosifying of aqueous copolymer solutions for gas channeling control during water-alternating-CO2 flooding

Xinjie Luo et al.

Summary: A copolymer was developed to control gas channeling and enhance oil recovery during enhanced WAG processes, by increasing aqueous solution viscosity through both heat and CO2. The copolymer can be thickened/gelled by heating and viscosified by bubbling CO2, with synergistic effects observed. These effects are completely reversible and in-situ thermo-induced gelation and CO2-triggered thickening effectively mitigated gas channeling in WAG flooding tests, leading to significantly higher oil recovery.
