Plasma assisted CO2 dissociation in pure and gas mixture streams with a ferroelectric packed-bed reactor in ambient conditions

Paula Navascues et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the successful decomposition of CO2 into CO and O-2 using a nonthermal plasma reactor moderated with Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) as the fermelectric component, achieving high conversion rates and energy efficiencies. Optical emission spectroscopy analysis shows a direct correlation between energy efficiency and intensity of CO* emission bands, suggesting the involvement of high temperature electrons in the CO2 splitting process.

Dry reforming of methane in an atmospheric pressure glow discharge: Confining the plasma to expand the performance

Bart Wanten et al.

Summary: The study introduces a confined atmospheric pressure glow discharge plasma reactor with excellent performance in dry reforming, achieving CO2 and CH4 conversion rates of 64% and 94% respectively. This outstanding performance is attributed to the plasma confinement, maximizing the gas passing through the active region.

CO2 conversion via coupled plasma-electrolysis process

Arunkumar Pandiyan et al.

Summary: Surplus renewable electricity can be used to convert CO2 into CO, which is the basis of liquid fuels, enabling large-scale energy storage and the synthesis of fuel for long-haul transportation. High-temperature electrolysis and plasmolysis are two promising technologies. However, both face challenges. High-temperature electrolysis has high yield and efficiency but requires electrode materials to break the carbon-oxygen double bond. Plasmolysis, on the other hand, has similar efficiency and is easy to scale up, but gas separation and recuperation are necessary due to the mixing of CO, O-2, and residual CO2. This study demonstrates the coupling of the two processes to overcome the main bottleneck of plasmolysis and achieve efficient CO2 conversion into valuable CO feedstock.

Carbon bed post-plasma to enhance the CO2 conversion and remove O2 from the product stream

Fanny Girard-Sahun et al.

Summary: This study enhances CO2 conversion and CO concentration, and removes O-2 from exhaust by placing a carbon bed after a plasma reactor. The oxygen coverage plays a key role in determining product composition and carbon consumption rate. The initial enhancements are not maintained due to deactivation of the carbon bed.

Heavy Particle Impact Vibrational Excitation and Dissociation Processes in CO2

Joao Vargas et al.

Summary: A heavy particle impact vibrational excitation and dissociation model for CO2 based on forced harmonic oscillator (FHO) theory is proposed. The model is benchmarked against academic zero-dimensional cases and compared to decomposition time measurements in a shock tube, demonstrating reasonable predictive capabilities. The study emphasizes the key influence of the CO2 + O -> CO + O-2 reaction on the dissociation dynamics of CO2 shocked flows and discusses further theoretical improvements needed for a more consistent analysis.

Effect of oxygen atoms on the vibrational kinetics of CO2 and CO revealed by the use of a large surface area material

A. S. Morillo-Candas et al.

Summary: The study shows that a larger specific surface area leads to a significant increase in vibrational excitation of CO2 and CO due to low O atom density, indicating that atomic oxygen is a strong quencher of the vibrations of both species. Additionally, the use of large specific surfaces does not necessarily result in lower vibrational excitation as previously expected. The results also demonstrate that large surfaces, catalytic or not, may have a notable impact on plasma kinetics by affecting the recombination of gas phase species.

Enhanced conversion of CO2 into O2-free fuel gas via the Boudouard reaction with biochar in an atmospheric plasmatron

Jingying Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the CO2 reaction with biochar via the Boudouard reaction in an atmospheric non-thermal plasmatron for enhanced conversion of CO2 into O2-free fuel gas. It was found that by adding coconut shell biochar, the net Boudouard reaction became the dominant contributor to CO2 conversion, leading to significantly higher CO yield and lower O2 concentration in the products compared to the CO2 decomposition process.
