Soluble uric acid inhibits β2 integrin-mediated neutrophil recruitment in innate immunity

Qiuyue Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of uric acid on neutrophils and finds that hyperuricemia impairs neutrophil function. Partial reduction of uric acid levels using uricase can partially restore the neutrophil defects. The study reveals that uric acid affects neutrophil migration by regulating intracellular pH and cytoskeletal dynamics. These findings have important implications for understanding immunodeficiency in kidney disease and sterile inflammation.

Uricase-deficient rats with similarly stable serum uric acid to human's are sensitive model animals for studying hyperuricemia

Yinfang Gao et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to provide a sensitive animal model for studying hyperuricemia. Male uricase-deficient rats were used in the study and it was found that they were sensitive to purines and other chemicals, with high levels of uric acid. The distribution pattern of uric acid in the rats' organs was different from wild-type rats, and the majority of uric acid was excreted via urine. The metabolism of uric acid in uricase-deficient rats is similar to that of humans, making them a suitable model for studying hyperuricemia.

Summary: Gout is a common and treatable disease caused by the deposition of monosodium urate crystals in the body, leading to arthritis. Long-term urate lowering therapy is effective in preventing gout flares and improving quality of life.

Pioneer neutrophils release chromatin within in vivo swarms

Hannah M. Isles et al.

Summary: Neutrophils are rapidly recruited to inflammatory sites where they form clusters through a process called neutrophil swarming. Study using transgenic zebrafish larvae shows that neutrophil swarming is a conserved process in zebrafish immunity and involves the release of cellular components by pioneer neutrophils to initiate the swarming process.
