Novel UBE3A pathogenic variant in a large Georgian family produces non-convulsive status epilepticus responsive to ketogenic diet

Gia Melikishvili et al.

Summary: This study suggests that the ketogenic diet is a safe and effective treatment for non-convulsive status epilepticus due to Angelman syndrome. The resolution of seizures before the appearance of ketone bodies indicates a possible mechanism of action for the ketogenic diet.

Intravenous methylprednisolone is a potential add on therapy for Ring chromosome 20 syndrome

Vyasaraj Kalya Kishore et al.

Summary: Ring 20 syndrome is a rare condition that can cause refractory epilepsy and non-convulsive status epilepticus in children. This study reports a patient with Ring 20 syndrome who had refractory focal seizures and non-convulsive status epilepticus, and showed good response to intravenous steroids, highlighting the potential usefulness of this treatment strategy.

Ring chromosome 20: a further contribution to the delineation of epileptic phenotype

Milan Borkovic et al.

Summary: Ring chromosome 20 (r(20)) syndrome is a rare genetic abnormality characterized by fusion of the two arms of the 20th chromosome, resulting in intractable epilepsy and a range of behavioral and cognitive deficits. This case report highlights four patients diagnosed with r(20) syndrome between 2000-2018, demonstrating the clinical relevance of the syndrome. Early onset refractory epilepsy, particularly nocturnal seizures, should prompt physicians to consider this chromosomal abnormality. Routine karyotyping can facilitate identification of affected individuals.

The spectrum of epilepsy in children with 15q13.3 microdeletion syndrome

Robyn Whitney et al.

Summary: The epilepsy phenotype in children with 15q13.3 microdeletion syndrome is characterized by childhood onset absence seizures, commonly accompanied by intellectual disability. Valproate appears to be effective in treating these seizures, but other treatment options need to be explored further to address treatment resistance and potential atypical features.

Clinical aspects of a large group of adults with Angelman syndrome

Summary: This study describes the clinical phenotypes of Angelman syndrome (AS) in adults, revealing significant health issues such as constipation, reflux, visual problems, scoliosis, behavioral problems, and sleeping problems. Epilepsy was reported in 57% of adults with AS, impacting their level of functioning. A decline in mobility was noted in the majority of adults, with a minority showing microcephaly.

Klinefelter's Syndrome with Maternal Uniparental Disomy X, Interstitial Xp22.31 Deletion, X-linked Ichthyosis, and Severe Central Nervous System Regression

Jennifer Brault et al.

Summary: A patient with Klinefelter syndrome was found to have unique clinical and cytogenetic features, including an interstitial Xp22.31 deletion of both X chromosomes, which have not been reported in association with KS or Xp22.31 deletions before. Despite available genetic and biochemical information, the seizures, strokes, and brain regression in this patient remain unexplained.
