Predicting COVID-19 cases using SARS-CoV-2 RNA in air, surface swab and wastewater samples

Helena M. Solo-Gabriele et al.

Summary: Genomic footprints of pathogens shed by infected individuals can be traced in environmental samples, which can serve as a noninvasive method of infectious disease surveillance. This research evaluated the efficacy of monitoring SARS-CoV-2 RNA in air, surface swabs, and wastewater to predict COVID-19 cases. The study found that detection of SARS-CoV-2 in environmental samples was an indicator of the presence of local COVID-19 cases and had the potential to predict outbreaks in a dormitory setting with a 3-day lead indicator.

Systematic Review of Ozone Effects on Human Lung Function, 2013 Through 2020

Stephanie M. Holm et al.

Summary: This article summarizes epidemiological studies published from 2013 to 2020 on the association between ozone exposure and lung function. The findings suggest that even very low levels of short-term ozone exposure can lead to slight decreases in children's lung function. The effects of low-level, short-term ozone exposure on adult lung function are less clear, although decrements in lung function may occur in the elderly. Long-term ozone exposure decreases both lung function and lung function growth in children, but few studies have examined long-term ozone exposure and lung function in adults.

Ozone for SARS-CoV-2 inactivation on surfaces and in liquid cell culture media

Chedly Tizaoui et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 by ozone, both in liquid and on surfaces. Treatment in liquid reduced SARS-CoV-2 at a rate of 0.92 +/- 0.11 log(10)-reduction per ozone CT dose. On surface, the synergistic effect of ozone CT value and relative humidity was key to virus inactivation.

Transcriptomic profiling of Escherichia coli K-12 in response to a compendium of stressors

Rama P. Bhatia et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the response mechanisms of E. coli to different environmental stressors. Gene co-expression networks are analyzed to study gene expression patterns, clustering analysis, and the functions of transcription factors. These findings are important for understanding the regulatory mechanisms of bacteria in stressful environments.

Ozone Eliminates SARS-CoV-2 from Difficult-to-Clean Office Supplies and Clinical Equipment

Laura B. Torres-Mata et al.

Summary: This study assessed the optimal conditions of ozone treatment for eliminating heat-inactivated SARS-CoV-2 from office supplies and clinical equipment. Results showed that ozone could effectively eliminate the virus RNA, providing an additional tool to control the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Effectiveness of 222-nm ultraviolet light on disinfecting SARS-CoV-2 surface contamination

Hiroki Kitagawa et al.

Summary: The study showed that 222-nm UVC irradiation was effective in reducing the viability of SARS-CoV-2 on surfaces, but had minimal impact on the virus RNA. Further research on the safety and effectiveness of 222-nm UVC in real-world settings is needed to assess its potential in preventing the spread of SARS-CoV-2.

Summary: By utilizing a fast colorimetric test (LAMP) for SARS-CoV-2 infection and large-scale shotgun metatranscriptomics for host, viral, and microbial profiling, the authors provide insights into the viral genetic features of the New York City outbreak and associate specific host responses and gene expression perturbations with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of four different RTqPCR master mixes on the performance of SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic PCRs, with assay C consistently detecting the lowest quantity of partial N gene RNA transcript. The Takara One Step PrimeScriptTM III RT-PCR Kit mastermix enabled all primer pairs to detect the entire dynamic range, indicating potential options for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis.
