MMP20-generated amelogenin cleavage products prevent formation of fan-shaped enamel malformations

John D. Bartlett et al.

Summary: The study investigated enamel ribbon formation in mouse models lacking the Amelx or Mmp20 gene, revealing abnormal structures during enamel development. Amelx(-/-) mice showed fan-shaped structures with multiple branches, while Mmp20(-/-) mice had fan-like structures capped with a hard, disorganized outer mineral layer at around 20 micrometers.
