Cycloserine and Linezolid for Tuberculosis Meningitis: Pharmacokinetic Evidence of Potential Usefulness

Russell R. Kempker et al.

Summary: This study fills a critical knowledge gap regarding the ability of antituberculosis drugs to penetrate into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and provides valuable pharmacokinetic data for the treatment of tuberculosis meningitis (TBM). Linezolid and cycloserine showed moderate to high CSF penetration and may be effective drugs for TBM treatment, while the efficacy of bedaquiline, delamanid, and clofazimine remains uncertain due to their low CSF penetration.

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis

Surendra K. Sharma et al.

Summary: Tuberculosis is a major global health concern, with extrapulmonary TB accounting for a significant portion of cases. New imaging technologies have improved diagnosis and treatment evaluation, while advances in drug-susceptibility testing have enhanced treatment options for drug-resistant strains. Surgical intervention and adjunctive therapy may also be necessary in certain cases to improve outcomes and manage complications in EPTB patients.

Meropenem Stability in Human Plasma at-20 °C: Detailed Assessment of Degradation

Matthias Gijsen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the degradation of meropenem in human plasma stored at -20 degrees C over 1 year, showing concentration-dependent degradation up to 35.1 mg/L. The findings suggest that meropenem is stable in human plasma at -20 degrees C for at least up to approximately 80 days, with accurate prediction models for degradation provided.

Clinical outcomes among patients with tuberculous meningitis receiving intensified treatment regimens

A. G. C. Smith et al.

Summary: Intensified multidrug treatment regimens, including the use of fluoroquinolones and injectable agents, in TBM patients resulted in low mortality rates and favorable neurological outcomes, especially when newly implemented drugs were used in patients with multidrug-resistant TBM.

Meropenem concentrations in brain tissue of neurointensive care patients exceed CSF levels

Arthur Hosmann et al.

Summary: This study compared the concentration of meropenem in the blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and cerebral microdialysate of neurointensive care patients. The results showed that the activity concentration of meropenem in brain tissue was significantly higher than in CSF, indicating that CSF concentrations underestimated the activity of meropenem beyond the blood-brain barrier.
