The effects of concurrent M1 anodal tDCS and physical therapy interventions on function of ankle muscles in patients with stroke: a randomized, double-blinded sham-controlled trial study

Fatemeh Ehsani et al.

Summary: The study found that in stroke patients, M1 a-tDCS treatment can effectively reduce spasticity, increase muscle activity, and improve balance. Compared to only receiving physical therapy, concurrent PT and M1 a-tDCS treatment can produce long-lasting positive effects in stroke patients.

Summary: A combination protocol of brain stimulation and targeted stance phase training was developed and tested for individuals with chronic gait deficits after stroke. Statistically and clinically significant improvements in gait speed and lower limb function were observed after 10 treatment sessions.

Feasibility of combining functional near-infrared spectroscopy with electroencephalography to identify chronic stroke responders to cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation-a computational modeling and portable neuroimaging methodological study

Zeynab Rezaee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of portable neuroimaging of cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (ctDCS) effects on the cerebral cortex in stroke survivors. The results showed correlations between lobular electric field strength, oxy-hemoglobin concentrations, and EEG bandpower changes following ctDCS treatment. Additionally, insights were provided into non-responders to ctDCS who also exhibited poor performance in virtual reality-based balance training due to ideomotor apraxia. Future studies are recommended to further investigate non-responders using joint fNIRS-EEG imaging in a larger cohort.

Investigating the feasibility of cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation to facilitate post-stroke overground gait performance in chronic stroke: a partial least-squares regression approach

Dhaval Solanki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of lobule-specific cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (ctDCS) on overground gait performance in chronic stroke patients. The results showed that both lobule-specific bilateral ctDCS montages improved walking performance, with the mean electric field strength in cerebellar lobules correlated to changes in gait parameters. Clinical assessments found improvement in gait performance based on minimal clinically important differences, indicating the potential for further clinical validation with larger sample sizes.

Victor Navarro-Lopez et al.

Summary: This review focused on the efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with conventional physiotherapy on gait, balance, and lower limb functionality after stroke. The results showed improvements in these aspects for stroke patients, but long-term effects still need further study.
