Characteristics of disrupted topological organization in white matter functional connectome in schizophrenia

Yuchao Jiang et al.

Summary: This study examined the global topological disruptions of large-scale white matter (WM) and grey matter (GM) networks in patients with schizophrenia (SZ) using resting-state functional MRI and graph theoretical approaches. The results showed abnormal global topological properties in both WM and GM networks in SZ. Moreover, specific regions in WM and GM exhibited nodal disturbances. The findings suggest compensatory functional alterations in WM may occur in response to impairments in adjacent GM in SZ.

Interaction of chemotherapy and radiotherapy in altering the shape of subcortical structures in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Feibiao Nan et al.

Summary: Neuroimaging studies have revealed that patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) who undergo radiotherapy (RT) or concomitant chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) experience significant structural changes in the cerebral cortex, while the effects on subcortical structures are not well understood. This study investigated subcortical shape alterations in NPC patients before and after RT or CCRT, and found that CCRT-treated patients exhibited significant inward atrophy in multiple subcortical structures, while RT-treated patients only showed inward atrophy in the bilateral thalamus. Furthermore, a higher dosage of RT for temporal lobes was associated with more severe inward atrophy of the bilateral thalamus in treated NPC patients.

Irradiation-related longitudinal white matter atrophy underlies cognitive impairment in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Xiaoshan Lin et al.

Summary: As a function of irradiation dose and time, post-radiotherapy nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients showed selective and time-dependent white matter atrophy in specific brain regions compared to healthy controls. Furthermore, dose-dependent white matter atrophy in the right parahippocampal gyrus and its correlation with progressive cognitive impairment in patients suggest that white matter volume alterations could serve as a potential biomarker for detecting radiation-induced brain injury and studying ways to spare cognition during radiotherapy.

Standard radiotherapy for patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma results in progressive tract-specific brain white matter alterations: A one-year follow-up via diffusion tensor imaging

Yingwei Qiu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of standard radiation therapy on normal brain tissue in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) using in vivo neuroimaging. Results showed progressive diffusion reduction in bilateral cingulate angular bundle fibers in NPC patients during the first year post-RT, correlating with hippocampal atrophy and cognitive impairment. These findings suggest that white matter tract alterations may serve as potential biomarkers for detecting radiation therapy-related brain injury and cognitive decline in NPC patients.

Altered Topological Properties of Static/Dynamic Functional Networks and Cognitive Function After Radiotherapy for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Using Resting-State fMRI

Xi Leng et al.

Summary: The study revealed abnormal changes in the topological properties and functional connectivity of brain networks after radiotherapy, which could potentially serve as biomarkers for radiation brain injury. Cognitive functions were affected to varying degrees, primarily in memory, executive function, and overall cognitive function.
