A retrospective review of cochlear implant revision surgery: a 24-year experience in China

Jingyuan Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the reasons and rate of cochlear implant revision surgeries in China, aiming to reduce the rate of non-device failure revisions. Results showed a 2.61% revision surgery rate, predominantly due to device and non-device failures, with children being more likely to undergo a second surgery.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence of specific abnormal impedance patterns or electrode faults in pediatric cochlear implant recipients, finding a certain association with device damage and failure. While the overall incidence of electrode abnormalities was relatively low, partial SC abnormalities should not be overlooked and require close monitoring and proactive management.

The Neural Processing of Vocal Emotion After Hearing Reconstruction in Prelingual Deaf Children: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Brain Imaging Study

Yuyang Wang et al.

Summary: This study used fNIRS imaging to investigate the early neural processing of vocal emotion perception and recognition in ITCIs, revealing differences in neural processing between preoperative and postoperative tests, as well as a negative bias elicited by fear emotion. There were no significant differences in speech perception and production abilities between preoperative and postoperative tests. Additionally, the study found significant correlations between the response of the right SMG to anger stimuli and postoperative behavioral outcomes.

Cochlear Implantation in Infants: Evidence of Safety

Nicholas L. Deep et al.

Summary: This study investigated complications associated with cochlear implantation in children under 1 year old and found the surgery to be safe, with no major complications reported. There was no correlation between adverse events and preexisting medical conditions or duration under anesthesia. The study supports lowering the age indication for cochlear implantation to under 1 year for children with severe-to-profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss.

Cochlear Implantation in Infants: Why and How

Patricia L. Purcell et al.

Summary: Early cochlear implantation in children with congenital deafness can lead to better auditory and language development, with early detection and diagnosis of hearing loss through universal newborn hearing screening facilitating timely intervention. Confirming candidacy for cochlear implantation in infants can be challenging, but a multidisciplinary approach is recommended for diagnosis confirmation and counseling families on expectations and long-term management.
