Toward a Clearer Definition of Selection Bias When Estimating Causal Effects

Haidong Lu et al.

Summary: Selection bias remains controversial with ambiguous definitions. To improve epidemiological research on causal effects, the authors propose a unified definition for selection bias as any deviation from the true causal effect in the reference population due to sample selection. This unified definition categorizes selection bias into two types: type 1, caused by restriction to one or more levels of a collider, and type 2, caused by restriction to one or more levels of an effect measure modifier. The authors illustrate both types using causal diagrams and discuss methods to minimize selection bias.

Apathy co-occurs with subjective cognitive decline among community- dwelling older adults

Qing Yang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between apathy and subjective cognitive decline (SCD) in community-dwelling older adults. The results showed that apathy was independently and significantly associated with SCD. This highlights the importance of early intervention on apathy to protect elderly cognitive functioning.

Secondhand Tobacco Smoke and Functional Impairments in Older Adults Living in the Community

Oana M. Craciun et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively examined the potential association between secondhand smoke exposure and broad functional limitations in older adults. The findings suggest that lifelong and old-age exposure to secondhand smoke may accelerate functional decline, with a stronger impact on older adults with chronic conditions.

The negative impact of chronic tobacco smoking on adult neuropsychological function: a cross-sectional study

Mohammed Sh Nadar et al.

Summary: The study found that chronic tobacco smoking was associated with poorer performance across various neuropsychological domains, suggesting a negative impact on cognition. Smokers showed deficits in selective attention, alternating attention, memory functions, processing accuracy, and executive function compared to non-smokers. Smoking accumulation and an earlier onset of regular smoking were linked to lower neuropsychological function.
