Following the Occurrence and Origin of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles in the Sava River by Single Particle ICP-MS

Janja Vidmar et al.

Summary: This study reports for the first time the levels of anthropogenic titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO(2)NPs) in different compartments of the Sava River and identifies urban, agricultural, and/or industrial activities as the main sources of these particles. The results also highlight the significant influence of hydrological conditions and sediment composition on the levels of TiO(2)NPs in river water.

Episodic surges in titanium dioxide engineered particle concentrations in surface waters following rainfall events

Md Mahmudun Nabi et al.

Summary: This study characterized and quantified titanium dioxide engineered particles in the Broad River, South Carolina during and following rainfall events, showing urban runoff as the major source of these particles in urban rivers. Urban runoff resulted in episodic high concentrations of titanium dioxide engineered particles, posing potential environmental risks.

Concentrations and size distribution of TiO2 and Ag engineered particles in five wastewater treatment plants in the United States

Md Mahmudun Nabi et al.

Summary: This study examined the concentrations, removal efficiencies, and particle size distributions of Ag and TiO2 engineered particles in five WWTPs in the United States. The study found that the removal efficiency of TiO2 engineered particles was higher than that for Ag engineered particles, and the particles entering WWTPs were mainly in the nanosized range.

Summary: Characterization of soil natural nanomaterials (NNMs) at the single particle level using single particle-inductively coupled plasma-time of flight-mass spectrometer can provide baseline information on the elemental composition, associations, and ratios of NNMs, which can be utilized to differentiate NNMs vs. engineered nanomaterials in environmental systems.

Metal-Containing Nanoparticles in Low-Rank Coal-Derived Fly Ash from China: Characterization and Implications toward Human Lung Toxicity

Jiayuan Wu et al.

Summary: Characterization of nanoparticles in coal fly ashes is crucial for understanding health risks from coal combustion. Iron and titanium-containing nanoparticles were identified as dominant, with potential to induce lung tissue damage if inhaled. The differences in NP content were regulated by coalification degree and combustion conditions, highlighting the importance of studying NPs in low-rank coal-derived fly ashes.
