Use and misuse of the Kubelka-Munk function to obtain the band gap energy from diffuse reflectance measurements

Salmon Landi et al.

Summary: The authors demonstrate how to use the K-M function and apply it to determine the E-g of TiO2 semiconductor powder, highlighting drawbacks and misconceptions in the procedure of E-g determination from the K-M theory and DRS data, emphasizing that directly determining E-g from the K-M function is inadequate.

Preparation, structural and photocatalytic activity of Sn/Fe co-doped TiO2 nanoparticles by sol-gel method

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: Based on the results, co-doping of Sn/Fe in TiO2 nanoparticles inhibited the crystallization transformation and decreased the energy band gap. The abnormal grain growth of the particles was observed due to the influence of calcination temperature and dopant. The co-doped nanoparticles with 0.6 at.% Sn/0.2 at.% Fe and 1.0 at.% Sn/1.0 at.% Fe showed better photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation, while the nanoparticles co-doped with 0.2 at.% Sn and 0.6 at.% Fe and calcined at 650 degrees C exhibited the highest photocatalytic performance under UV light irradiation.

Evaluation of band gap energy of TiO2 precipitated from titanium sulphate

Salmon Landi Jr et al.

Summary: The determination of band gap energy of semiconductors powder materials can be achieved through diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. In this study, the classical theory proposed by Kubelka and Munk as well as the Tauc plot method are investigated. The results show that the samples treated with a mechaniochemical process exhibit lower band gap energy compared to previous studies.

Surface-Enriched Boron-Doped TiO2 Nanoparticles as Photocatalysts for Propene Oxidation

L. Cano-Casanova et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of nanostructured boron-TiO2 photocatalysts were synthesized and the effects of boron loading and crystallization temperature on their properties and catalytic performance were investigated. The results showed that the presence of boric acid affected the formation of the nanostructure, and the best-performing catalysts had lower boron loading.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance of BiVO4/BiOBr through combining Fermi level alteration and oxygen defect engineering

Chun Liu et al.

Summary: The introduction of oxygen vacancies can enhance photocatalytic activity, but its influence on the interfacial charge transfer pathway is still not well understood. In this study, BiVO4/BiOBr-Ov photocatalysts were synthesized and characterized. The results showed that 20% BVB-Ov had the highest degradation rate for Oxytetracycline. Various experiments and calculations revealed that the existence of oxygen vacancies altered the photogenerated carrier transfer path from type-II to Z-scheme.
