Single-atom catalysis for organic reactions

Hanyu Hu et al.

Summary: Metal-based catalysis, including homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, is widely used in the modern chemical industry. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as a promising class of catalytic material that bridges homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic processes. This review provides an introduction and development history of SACs in organic reactions, as well as a comprehensive overview of their recent advances and practical applications. The structure-property relationships, metal atom-utilization efficiency, and catalytic performance of SACs in organic reactions are summarized, and the limitations, trends, challenges, and future perspectives of SACs for organic reactions are discussed.

Mechanistic and kinetic studies of benzyl alcohol photocatalytic oxidation by nanostructured titanium (hydro)oxides: Do we know the entire story?

Dimitrios A. Giannakoudakis et al.

Summary: Selective partial oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde without additives was achieved using advantageous titanium oxide nano-photocatalysts. Titanate nanotubes and nanocores of anatase surrounded by amorphous titanium hydroxide phase performed the best. Different mechanisms and oxidation pathways are photo-catalyzed depending on the physicochemical features of the nanocatalysts and the light irradiation. The study also revealed that utilizing organic compounds like benzoquinone as scavenger may result in photolytic decomposition.

Mechanism and kinetics of the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde catalyzed by cobalt porphyrin in a membrane microchannel reactor

Qi Han et al.

Summary: In a membrane microchannel reactor, the selective aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde catalyzed by cobalt porphyrin achieved high efficiency, with a conversion and benzaldehyde selectivity of 82% and 98% in 6.5 min. Kinetic studies revealed that the oxidation follows Michaelis-Menten kinetics, with a proposed mathematic kinetic model that fits well with experimental data and can predict reaction processes at various benzyl alcohol concentrations, aiding in process optimization and reactor design.

Methane oxidation activity and nanoscale characterization of Pd/CeO2 catalysts prepared by dry milling Pd acetate and ceria

Maila Danielis et al.

Summary: The milling of Palladium acetate and CeO2 under dry conditions results in robust and environmentally friendly catalysts with excellent methane oxidation activity. The characterization techniques used in this study identified the presence of Pd-0/Pd2+ species with different degrees of interaction with ceria (Ce3+/Ce4+), which are believed to be responsible for the enhanced catalytic activity. This study provides insight into the mechanistic understanding of the catalytic performance of Pd/CeO2 catalysts prepared by dry milling.
