Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Radiation-induced acute injury of intensity-modulated radiotherapy versus three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy in induction chemotherapy followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy for locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a prospective cohort study

Zexin Yao et al.

Summary: The study revealed that in locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients, the use of IMRT appears to increase the risk of acute radiation-induced injuries compared to 3D-CRT, particularly in dermatitis. Patients in the IMRT group showed a lower risk of bone marrow toxicity, but a higher risk of leukopenia and gastrointestinal injury.

Gemcitabine synergizes with cisplatin to inhibit nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell proliferation and tumor growth

Shi-Wei He et al.

Summary: The combination of gemcitabine and cisplatin significantly inhibits NPC cell proliferation and tumor growth by inducing cell cycle arrest, cell apoptosis, and DNA damage response, revealing the mechanisms of improving locoregionally advanced NPC with combined GEM and DDP induction chemotherapy.

Metronomic capecitabine as adjuvant therapy in locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a multicentre, open-label, parallel-group, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial

Yu-Pei Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that adding oral metronomic capecitabine as adjuvant chemotherapy significantly improved failure-free survival in patients with high-risk locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma, with a good safety profile. These results support the potential role of metronomic chemotherapy as an adjuvant therapy in the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Benefit of chemotherapy in stage III nasopharyngeal carcinoma: Analysis of the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results database

Zhen-Fei Xiang et al.

Summary: Chemotherapy was found to be associated with decreased 5-year all-cause mortality and cancer-specific mortality in stage III nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients, particularly in those with node-positive disease, according to an analysis of 1452 patients. However, there was no observed chemotherapy benefit for patients with node-negative disease. Further investigation is needed to determine the magnitude of chemotherapy benefit in node-negative stage III NPC.

Modelling Radiation-Induced Salivary Dysfunction during IMRT and Chemotherapy for Nasopharyngeal Cancer Patients

Anna Cavallo et al.

Summary: A predictive model was built for acute salivary dysfunction in nasopharyngeal cancer patients, with the dosimetric part of the model being highly reliable while the clinical risk part has some limitations. Validation results confirmed the importance of dosimetric factors and the model's discriminative power.
