Behavioral Experience-Sampling Methods in Neuroimaging Studies With Movie and Narrative Stimuli

Iiro P. Jaaskelainen et al.

Summary: Movies and narratives are used in neuroimaging studies, and behavioral measures of inner experiences play a crucial role in analyzing the data. Recent developments in machine learning provide a potential approach for inferring inner experiences directly from neuroimaging data.

Masking of the mouth area impairs reconstruction of acoustic speech features and higher-level segmentational features in the presence of a distractor speaker

Chandra Leon Haider et al.

Summary: Multisensory integration allows for stimulus representation even with weak sensory input. This study investigated the effects of occluding the mouth area, such as wearing a face mask, on speech processing. The results showed significant impacts on the reconstruction of acoustic features and higher-level speech segmentation in difficult listening situations.

Influence of linguistic properties and hearing impairment on visual speech perception skills in the German language

Nina Suess et al.

Summary: Visual input plays a crucial role in understanding speech in noisy conditions, but there is a lack of tools to assess individual lipreading abilities. This study investigates the impact of linguistic characteristics and hearing impairment on lipreading abilities in German speakers. The findings reveal that item categories, articulation, sentence frequency, and sentence length have an influence on lipreading abilities. Additionally, a higher subjective hearing impairment is associated with a higher test score. The study also highlights the difference in lipreading abilities between prelingually deaf individuals and those with postlingual acquired hearing impairment. Based on these findings, a new and efficient lipreading assessment tool (SaLT) has been developed.
