Fundamentals of Intervertebral Disc Degeneration

Sertac Kirnaz et al.

Summary: Lumbar disc degeneration is a major cause of chronic low back pain, often due to an imbalance between catabolic and anabolic processes in the intervertebral discs. Regenerative biological therapies have the potential to directly address this degenerative process.

Inflammatory interactions between degenerated intervertebral discs and microglia: Implication of sphingosine-1-phosphate signaling

Stefania E. Navone et al.

Summary: The study found that conditioned media from degenerated intervertebral discs activated microglial cells more significantly than those from normal discs, increasing chemotaxis, migration, and release of pro-inflammatory mediators. Additionally, sphingosine-1-phosphate content in the conditioned media from degenerated discs was significantly higher than in normal discs, and FTY720 effectively inhibited the effects of degenerated discs on microglial inflammatory factor transcription and migration.

Genome-wide Association Analysis Across 16,956 Patients Identifies a Novel Genetic Association Between BMP6, NIPAL1, CNGA1 and Spondylosis

Yanfei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a case-control genome-wide association study on spondylosis, identifying a significant genetic locus and genetic correlations with pain, depression, and other traits. Leveraging a multimodal dataset, the research demonstrated the use of a massive genotype database combined with electronic health record data to advance the understanding of genetic factors influencing degenerative spine disease.
