Nitrogen dynamics and carbon sequestration in soil following application of digestates from one- and two-step anaerobic digestion

Jared Onyango Nyang'au et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion with an additional step can enhance nitrogen mineralization and carbon sequestration in soil, potentially increasing the N fertilizer value of digestate without negatively affecting carbon sequestration.

Carbon sequestration under different organic amendments in saline-alkaline soils

Lipeng Wu et al.

Summary: Organic amendments significantly increased soil organic C stock in saline paddy fields, with biochar treatment showing the highest increase. However, rice straw and organic fertilizer were found to be more effective in improving soil aggregate stability compared to biochar. This research highlights the importance of organic amendments in enhancing soil quality and carbon sequestration in saline-alkaline soils.

Tillage, green manure and residue management accelerate soil carbon pools and hydrolytic enzymatic activities for conservation agriculture based rice-wheat systems

Sandeep Sharma et al.

Summary: The study found that retaining wheat stubbles plus green manure in rice and retaining rice straw in zero till wheat significantly increased soil carbon pools and hydrolytic enzyme activities, with the carbon management index in the latter treatment being higher than conventional till or zero till wheat without residue. Principal component analysis identified active carbon, less labile carbon pools, xylanase, and dehydrogenase as reliable indicators for assessing soil quality in conservation agriculture practices. Adoption of these practices in the rice-wheat system was shown to be the best strategy for enhancing carbon pools and enzymatic activities, indicating overall fitness for ecosystem functions.

A cover crop and no-tillage system for enhancing soil health by increasing soil organic matter in soybean cultivation

Heppy Suci Wulanningtyas et al.

Summary: This study found that no-tillage systems and cover crop management can improve soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium-magnesium, bulk density, soil penetration resistance, and substrate-induced respiration which serve as indicators of soil health. The combination of no-till and rye cover crops appears to be a promising technique for enhancing SOC and soil health in Andisols. The melanic index values suggest that the soil is fulvic Andisols with low degree of humification, indicating that the no-till with rye system can enhance SOC and soil health.

Long-term effects of straw mulching coupled with N application on soil organic carbon sequestration and soil aggregation in a winter wheat monoculture system

Xiushuang Li et al.

Summary: Straw mulching combined with nitrogen application rates has an impact on crop yield, SOC sequestration, and soil aggregation. While straw mulching enhances SOC stock and lability in the surface soil, nitrogen application increases wheat production and shows different effects on SOC stock and aggregation.

Short-term effects of combined organic amendments on soil organic carbon sequestration in a rain-fed winter wheat system

Xiushuang Li et al.

Summary: The study showed that green manure, wheat straw, and farmyard manure had significant effects on SOC sequestration, with farmyard manure exhibiting the highest carbon sequestration efficiency, followed by green manure and wheat straw. Combinations of these amendments also effectively increased SOC sequestration in a cumulative manner.

Tracking Changes on Soil Structure and Organic Carbon Sequestration after 30 Years of Different Tillage and Management Practices

Ramon Bienes et al.

Summary: Long-term field trials on the effects of sustainable land management strategies for climate change adaptation and mitigation were conducted in central Spain, focusing on three tillage systems and two crop rotations. Results showed that no-tillage (NT) had the largest impact on soil organic carbon sequestration, macroaggregate stability, and bulk density. Reduced tillage intensity led to an increase in SOC stratification, indicating better soil conservation practices.

A review on carbon pools and sequestration as influenced by long-term management practices in a rice-wheat cropping system

G. S. Dheri et al.

Summary: The potential of soil to sequester carbon and mitigate climate change depends on factors such as cropping system, soil properties, and climate. Active carbon pools are sensitive indicators of management practice changes, while total SOC changes are less detectable in the short to medium term.
