Transfer-Enabled Fabrication of Graphene Wrinkle Arrays for Epitaxial Growth of AlN Films

Yuqing Song et al.

Summary: Understanding the formation mechanism of transfer-related graphene wrinkles allows for the fabrication of wrinkle arrays without altering the crystalline orientation of the entire graphene film. The choice of transfer medium with poor wettability on the corrugated surface of graphene is key to the formation of wrinkles, providing a new way to modify the surface properties of graphene for potential applications.

Lattice Polarity Manipulation of Quasi-vdW Epitaxial GaN Films on Graphene Through Interface Atomic Configuration

Fang Liu et al.

Summary: This study reports on the epitaxy of gallium nitride on graphene, demonstrating that atom arrangement (lattice polarity) can be tuned through manipulation of interface atomic configuration to achieve GaN films with different polarities. Additionally, the formation of an AlON thin layer in a growth environment with trace amounts of oxygen by using an aluminum nitride buffer/interlayer leads to unique metal polarity, explaining the observed metal polarity in wurtzite III-nitride films on 2D materials. Reported atomic modulation through interface manipulation provides an effective model for the growth of hexagonal nitride semiconductor layers on graphene, promoting the development of novel semiconductor devices.

Pinhole-seeded lateral epitaxy and exfoliation of GaSb films on graphene-terminated surfaces

Sebastian Manzo et al.

Summary: Remote epitaxy is a promising method for synthesizing thin films on lattice-mismatched substrates, but its mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, the authors demonstrate that pinhole defects in graphene can serve as selective nucleation sites for the growth of GaSb films. By introducing nanoscale openings in graphene, the growth and properties of 2D material masks can be controlled.

Impact of 2D-3D Heterointerface on Remote Epitaxial Interaction through Graphene

Hyunseok Kim et al.

Summary: Remote epitaxy is a promising technique for epitaxy of functional materials that can be released from substrates with atomic precision, enabling flexible, transferrable, and stackable freestanding single-crystalline membranes. The interaction of atoms and adatoms through 2D materials in remote epitaxy allows investigation and utilization of electrical/chemical/physical coupling of bulk materials via 2D materials.
