Modelling the role of membrane mechanics in cell adhesion on titanium oxide nanotubes

Matej Daniel et al.

Summary: Titanium surface treated with titanium oxide nanotubes has been used in studies to investigate the effect of surface topography on cell fate. However, there is significant variation in the predicted optimal diameter of the nanotubes among different studies. A model is proposed to explain cell adhesion to a nanostructured surface by considering cell protrusions into titanium nanotubes and adhesion to the surface. The results suggest that it is feasible to tune the surface topology to enhance the proliferation and differentiation of cells compatible with the given surface geometry.

Preparation of Smart Surfaces Based on PNaSS@PEDOT Microspheres: Testing of E. coli Detection

Elena Tomsik et al.

Summary: The main objective of this research is to gain fundamental knowledge about how the structure of polymers affects the physicochemical properties of films. A novel meta-material was developed as a model for manufacturing sensor layers. The experiment involved synthesizing cross-linked microspheres based on polyelectrolytes and forming a polymer shell. The results showed that the attached bacterial wall was destroyed upon application of a certain oxidation potential, making the microsphere particles promising materials for antifouling coatings.

Selective potentiometric detection of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in biologically relevant concentrations by a modified metalized polyporphyrine sensing layer coated with nonbiofouling poly (2-alkyl-2oxazoline)s

Tomas Urbanek et al.

Summary: We developed a selective potentiometric sensor for early detection and localization of inflammation on the surface of smart implants. The sensor can detect the presence of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and distinguish between different ROS. We also identified the most appropriate thiophene-based porphyrin and coordinated metal for sensor applications.

Electrochemical deposition of highly hydrophobic perfluorinated polyaniline film for biosensor applications

Elena Tomsik et al.

Summary: Highly hydrophobic perfluorinated polyaniline thin films were successfully prepared through electrochemical polymerization with excellent electronic conductivity and water-repelling properties. These films can serve as solid contacts for in situ monitoring of pH changes during early stages of inflammation and septic shock, demonstrating a fast response and stability over time. The superhydrophobic nature of the films allows suppression of interactions with interfering salts and proteins, making them suitable for biomedical applications.
