Coulomb Interactions and the Spatial Coherence of Femtosecond Nanometric Electron Pulses

Stefan Meier et al.

Summary: The transverse coherence of electrons is crucial in various applications such as electron microscopy. Pulsed versions of electron microscopy have been developed using femtosecond laser-triggering electron emission. In this study, we observed electron interference fringes and measured how the interference visibility decreases with increasing electron bunch charge. We explained the loss of coherence based on model simulations and linked the visibility reduction to an increase in the effective source size through the van Cittert-Zernike theorem.

Two-color coherent control in photoemission from gold needle tips

Philip Dienstbier et al.

Summary: In this study, coherent control of photoemission from a gold needle tip using a two-color laser field was demonstrated, with up to 96.5% visibility achieved. The visibility as a function of the second harmonic intensity was described by three interfering quantum pathways. Increasing the bias voltage applied to the tip reduced the maximum achievable visibility and modified the weights of the involved pathways. Simulation based on the time-dependent Schrodinger equation reproduced the characteristic cooperative signal and confirmed the involvement of three emission pathways.

Quantum Interference Visibility Spectroscopy in Two-Color Photoemission from Tungsten Needle Tips

Ang Li et al.

Summary: By studying the two-color visibility spectroscopy of multiphoton photoemissions from a solid-state nanoemitter, it was found that the visibility was around 90%, which could be varied between 0% and close to 100% by adjusting the relative intensity ratio of the two colors. Additionally, a theoretical model was able to explain all observations with great quantitative agreements, indicating the universality of this work in photo-driven quantum interference in various fields.

Strong-field spectra and optical near-field enhancement at aluminium needle tips

Timo Paschen et al.

Summary: The study explores the rescattering of photoemitted electrons at aluminium needle tips and identifies distinct features associated with strong-field rescattering. Utilizing this rescattering process, the research investigates the geometry-dependent enhanced optical near-field at the apex of the aluminium tip, which is supported by theoretical investigations and numerical simulations. The near-field enhancement at aluminium tips is found to have a strong dependence on tip opening angle and radius of curvature.

Coherent control at gold needle tips approaching the strong-field regime

Philip Dienstbier et al.

Summary: Coherent control of photoemission from a gold needle tip was demonstrated using an omega - 2(omega) field composed of strong few-cycle laser pulses, with nearfield intensity of around 4 TW/cm(2). Changing the relative phase between the fundamental field and its second harmonic modulated the total emitted photocurrent with visibilities of up to 80% despite strong and broadband excitation of the plasmonic material. This work combines a two-color coherent control scheme with strong-field physics enabled by a nanoplasmonic emitter.

Onset of charge interaction in strong-field photoemission from nanometric needle tips

Johannes Schoetz et al.

Summary: Research on photoemission and photocurrents from nano-sized tungsten needle tips exposed to controlled laser fields revealed a rapid increase in emitted electron energies beyond a certain intensity threshold, indicating the onset of charge interaction dominated photoemission dynamics. This finding may also be relevant for photoemission from other nanostructures and PHz-scale devices.
