Reaching the Ultimate Efficiency of Solar Energy Harvesting with a Nonreciprocal Multijunction Solar Cell

Yubin Park et al.

Summary: The Landsberg limit represents the ultimate efficiency limit of solar energy harvesting, which can be reached by using nonreciprocal elements. A nonreciprocal multijunction solar cell has been introduced, showing that it can reach the Landsberg limit with an infinite number of layers and outperform a standard reciprocal cell with a finite number of layers. This work simplifies the device configuration needed to reach the ultimate limit of solar energy conversion and suggests a way to improve solar energy harvesting using nonreciprocity.

Adjoint Kirchhoff?s Law and General Symmetry Implications for All Thermal Emitters

Cheng Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between angular spectral absorptivity and emissivity for thermal emitters with various properties. By establishing an adjoint Kirchhoff's law and considering the symmetries of the system characterized by Shubnikov point groups, the relations between absorptivity and emissivity are derived. The theory is numerically verified for different types of point groups and structures.

Violation of Kirchhoff's Law of Thermal Radiation with Space-Time Modulated Grating

Alok Ghanekar et al.

Summary: This study presents an infrared thermal emitter that violates Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation by achieving unequal emissivity and absorptivity for a given frequency and angle of incidence. The researchers use spatio-temporal modulation of the refractive index of a grating to drive photonic transitions between guided resonance modes, resulting in directional-dependent reflection. The simulations show that strong contrast between absorptivity and emissivity can be obtained near a wavelength of 3.6 mu m with realistic modulation frequencies of 10s of GHz. The study also reveals that strong modulation leads to directional Rabi splitting, further enhancing the contrast between emissivity and absorptivity.

Nonreciprocal infrared absorption via resonant magneto-optical coupling to InAs

Komron J. Shayegan et al.

Summary: In this study, we broke time-reversal symmetry and reciprocity in n-type-doped magneto-optic InAs with a static magnetic field. Using a guided-mode resonator structure, we observed nonreciprocal absorptive behavior in the infrared, providing a new avenue for designing devices with unequal absorptivity and emissivity.

Generalized multi-channel scheme for secure image encryption

Romil Audhkhasi et al.

Summary: Utilizing metamaterials and hyperspectral imaging, a new image encryption scheme has been proposed that disperses plain image data across multiple seemingly random cipher images, each transmitted on separate spectral channels, effectively increasing the size of the key space for secure transmission.

Nonreciprocal Thermal Emitters Using Metasurfaces with Multiple Diffraction Channels

Bo Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates a new type of nonreciprocal thermal emitters that can simultaneously couple to multiple diffraction channels, breaking the symmetry relation between absorptivity and emissivity in previous diffraction emitters and significantly broadening the angular range of the nonreciprocal effect. These multichannel emitters can function as one-way energy splitters, expanding the flexibility of thermal-radiation control in nonreciprocal thermal-emitter design.
