Spatiotemporal changes in global aridity in terms of multiple aridity indices: An assessment based on the CRU data

Safi Ullah et al.

Summary: Aridity poses potential risks to a significant portion of the world's population, affecting poverty, crop and livestock production, water scarcity, and biodiversity loss. However, limited attention has been given to studying the aridity phenomenon using multiple indices. This study assessed global aridity changes from 1901 to 2019 and found that the most intense and extensive aridity occurred in recent decades, particularly in equatorial and subtropical zones. The increase in temperature and decrease in soil moisture have contributed to the global aridity process. Regional and local-scale application of aridity indices is needed for more robust results and better planning and management of agriculture and water resources.

Extreme Precipitation Events in Alaska: Historical Trends and Projected Changes

Claire L. Bachand et al.

Summary: This study evaluates historical and future changes in extreme precipitation events in Alaska. The research finds that while most historical rainfall events have set record highs, the frequency of such events is projected to remain infrequent according to climate models, with the exception of a few locations where heavy precipitation events are expected to increase.

Degradation and deforestation in the Conchos river basin (Mexico): predictive modeling through logistic regression (1985-2016)

Luis Carlos Bravo Pena et al.

Summary: This study identified the pine, oak, and mixed forest areas with the highest probability of degradation and deforestation in the Conchos river basin, Mexico. Using map algebra and logistic regression analysis, the authors calculated the extent of degradation from 1985 to 2016 and identified the key physical and socioeconomic factors associated with forest loss. The findings revealed that marginalization, mining concessions, and land tenure were the most influential factors in deforestation/degradation. The study provides valuable insights for preventing forest loss and facilitating environmental management in the basin.

Incorporating multi-criteria decision-making and fuzzy-value functions for flood susceptibility assessment

Ali Azareh et al.

Summary: This study developed an integrated framework for flood susceptibility assessment in the Haraz watershed in Iran, using data to select flood-influencing indices and employing DEMATEL, ANP, and FVF methods for evaluation. The results indicated that sub-watershed C1 was highly susceptible to flooding and in need of flood management.

Future surface temperature changes for the Iberian Peninsula according to EURO-CORDEX climate projections

D. Carvalho et al.

Summary: Future temperatures in the Iberian Peninsula are projected to substantially increase, especially in the southern region, with mean and maximum temperatures expected to rise and more days above 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. Particularly in the south-central part, significant increases in hot and very hot days are anticipated, posing potential severe impacts on the population, environment, and economy. The regions currently experiencing the highest temperatures are also projected to have the highest temperature increases, aggravating temperature stress in these areas.

Etemadi multiple linear regression

Sepideh Etemadi et al.

Summary: Traditional regression modeling focuses on the accuracy of the model rather than its reliability. This new methodology proposed in the paper emphasizes maximizing the reliability of the model. Results indicate that in 19 out of 30 benchmark cases, the proposed model shows better generalization ability compared to traditional ones, highlighting the importance of considering both accuracy and reliability in modeling procedures.

The Study of Drought in Future Climate Scenarios in the Huang-Huai-Hai Region

Gengmin Jiang et al.

Summary: In future climate scenarios, drought in the Huang-Huai-Hai region will be alleviated to some extent with the increase of rainfall, but intensified with the rise of greenhouse gas concentration, posing a significant challenge to agricultural water use in the region.

The Identification and Classification of Arid Zones through Multicriteria Evaluation and Geographic Information Systems-Case Study: Arid Regions of Northwest Mexico

Lidia Yadira Perez-Aguilar et al.

Summary: This study assessed and classified arid and semiarid zones in Northwest Mexico using a methodology based on multicriteria evaluation analysis, weighted linear combination technique, and geographic information systems. The results indicated that semiarid and dry subhumid zones predominated, with Baja California and Baja California Sur having the largest arid and semiarid zones.
