Overview of the performance of satellite fire products in China: Uncertainties and challenges

Jinxi Chen et al.

Summary: Satellite fire observations are crucial for estimating global biomass burning emissions. This study evaluates the performance of common satellite fire products in eastern China and finds large omission errors and algorithm defects in different types of satellite observations. Himawari-8 shows a higher fire count but with more false alarms. Small agricultural fires that are not detected by common satellite fires are discovered by UAV supervision.

The CALIPSO retrieved spatiotemporal and vertical distributions of AOD and extinction coefficient for different aerosol types during 2007-2019: A recent perspective over global and regional scales

Honglin Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the global distribution of aerosol optical properties for different aerosol types, including total aerosols, desert dust, polluted dust, and elevated smoke. The study found that the seasonal distribution of aerosol optical depth varied in different regions. Sand and dust activities in certain deserts contributed to higher aerosol optical depth in specific seasons. The study also observed high aerosol optical depth in ocean areas due to the transportation of aerosols from land sources. The extinction coefficient for all aerosols decreased with height in all seasons. Aerosols such as desert dust, polluted dust, and elevated smoke were found throughout the entire troposphere, while clean marine and polluted continent aerosols were mostly below 3 km.

Winter particulate pollution severity in North China driven by atmospheric teleconnections

Jiandong Li et al.

Summary: The East Atlantic-West Russia teleconnection pattern and the Victoria mode of sea surface temperature anomalies are identified as the dominant climate drivers for conducive weather patterns in North China. Utilizing seasonal forecasts from climate models, these drivers can be used to predict severe winter particulate pollution in order to protect human health.

The thermal infrared optical depth of mineral dust retrieved from integrated CALIOP and IIR observations

Jianyu Zheng et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that global climate models underestimate the size of dust particles, particularly the larger ones, which leads to an underestimation of the direct radiative effect of dust in the thermal infrared region. This study presents a simple approach to retrieve the optical depth of dust over the oceans at night using observations from the Infrared Imaging Radiometer and the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization. The study finds that the retrieval of dust optical depth is more affected by the particle size distribution assumption than the refractive indices of the dust.

Leiku Yang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of the MODIS DB product in Northwestern China. The results showed a significant underestimation of aerosol optical depth in both the old version (C6) and the new version (C6.1) of the algorithm. The improvements in C6.1 were not observed in most sites of Northwestern China, and there were even some sites where the accuracy declined.

Drivers of recent decline in dust activity over East Asia

Chenglai Wu et al.

Summary: Using a physically-based dust emission model, this study identifies the key factors driving the recent decline of dust activity in East Asia. The weakening of surface wind, increasing vegetation cover and soil moisture are all found to contribute to the decline. The dominant factor is the weakening of surface wind, while ecological restoration plays a minor role. The findings highlight the importance of climatic factors in driving the decline of dust activity in East Asia.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of tropical Pacific, North Atlantic, and Arctic ocean variability on dust activities in the Gobi Desert and North China and attempts to quantify their contributions. The results show that tropical Pacific SST variability has the most significant influence on dust activities in the Gobi Desert, while North Atlantic SST variability plays a crucial role in North China.

Summary: The concentration changes of aerosols have attracted wide-ranging attention during the COVID-19 lockdown period. This study assesses the impact of aerosol optical properties in various regions of China, highlighting the reduction in AOD and AEC levels. It also identifies the contribution of different sources and emphasizes the importance of considering emissions from the residential sector and thermal power plants in pollution-mitigation plans.

Climatology of Dust Aerosols over the Jianghan Plain Revealed with Space-Borne Instruments and MERRA-2 Reanalysis Data during 2006-2021

Chuan Liu et al.

Summary: In recent years, the seasonal features of Asian dust storms have been altered by climate change and anthropogenic activities. This study focuses on the climatology of dust aerosols over the Jianghan Plain in central China. It shows that dust aerosols frequently intrude into the region in spring and winter, while occurrence frequencies decline in autumn and summer. The dust particles are mainly distributed at lower altitudes and are associated with the Taklimakan Desert and Gobi Desert. The study also finds a possible mix of local anthropogenic aerosols with dust particles.

AEROsol generic classification using a novel Satellite remote sensing Approach (AEROSA)

Muhammad Bilal et al.

Summary: Numerous studies have attempted to classify aerosols into different types using only AOD and AE, but these parameters do not provide enough information for accurate classification. A new approach called AEROSA is introduced to provide information on aerosol amount and size based on AOD and AE, without claiming specific aerosol types. AEROSA can accommodate variations in location and season, unlike the traditional GA aerosol types.

Seo H. Ahn et al.

Summary: By studying the relationship between CCN and AOD in the Arctic region, a parameterized model was established and three different CCN estimation models were proposed based on different data sources. The results showed that the model using in situ aerosol optical properties most efficiently reproduced the observed CCN concentration.

Performance of MODIS aerosol products at various timescales and in different pollution conditions over eastern Asia

QianJun Mao et al.

Summary: High-quality aerosol optical depth (AOD) data derived from MODIS is widely used to study the spatiotemporal trends of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations in eastern Asia. The study found that the DB algorithm performs better under different pollution conditions, while the DT algorithm often fails to provide valid data during winter. The validations suggest that severe pollution significantly affects the validity of data obtained by the DB algorithm.

S. Sabetghadam et al.

Summary: Analyses of aerosol optical properties over the Middle East from 2001 to 2019 reveal significant seasonal and regional variability. The study shows that AOD values are highest over the Arabian Peninsula and southeastern Iran to western Pakistan, while lowest values are found over countries in the northern part of the region. The study also identifies dominance of mixed type aerosols in all seasons, with desert dust playing a significant role in spring and summer.

Simulation results show that China is likely to achieve the "Beautiful China 2035" target by 2035, with about half of the cities meeting the current WHO air quality guideline by 2060. Low-carbon policies are projected to contribute over 80% reductions in PM2.5 and O-3 concentrations by 2060.

Three-Dimensional Distribution of PM2.5 over the Yangtze River Delta as Cold Fronts Moving Through

Hanqing Kang et al.

Summary: This study found that most haze events in the Yangtze River Delta in autumn and winter were associated with cold frontal passages. During cold front episodes, the transport of PM2.5 mass from the North China Plain was 10-15 times higher compared to noncold front periods. Both unmanned aerial vehicle sounding and model simulation indicated a stronger and faster upper-level transport of PM2.5 than at ground level during cold front passage.
