Thermal Instability of Choline Chloride-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents and Its Influence on Their Toxicity-Important Limitations of DESs as Sustainable Materials

Mateusz Marchel et al.

Summary: The stability, reusability, and biocompatibility of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) play an important role in their applications. The study investigated the long-term stability of three choline chloride (ChCl)-based DESs formed using glucose, malonic acid, and urea as hydrogen bond donors. It was found that ChCl:urea DES showed high thermal stability and low toxicity to bacteria, making it a green solvent. However, ChCl:glucose DES decomposed at elevated temperatures and ChCl:malonic DES showed thermal instability and high toxicity compared to other DESs.

Are deep eutectic solvents really green?: A life-cycle perspective

Qammer Zaib et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential environmental impacts of a representative choline chloride (ChCl)/urea deep eutectic solvent (DES) called reline, using life-cycle assessment (LCA). The results show that reline has lower environmental impacts compared to certain organic solvents, but higher impacts compared to methanol and ethanol. The chemical constituent materials used in the synthesis of reline DES contribute significantly to its life-cycle environmental impacts. Additionally, LCA is performed on four other ChCl-based DESs, with ChCl/citric acid DES showing the highest environmental impacts.

Contrasting impacts of mobilisation and immobilisation amendments on soil health and heavy metal transfer to food chain

Jingtao Wu et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of mobilisation and immobilisation additives on soil health, microbial communities, and metal transfer in the soil-plant-insect system. Mobilisation additives inhibited plant growth, while immobilisation additives promoted plant growth and improved soil health. Organic immobilisation amendments were most effective in reducing metal transfer and improving soil health.
