Clay calcination technology: state-of-the-art review by the RILEM TC 282-CCL

Theodore Hanein et al.

Summary: The use of calcined clays as supplementary cementitious materials can significantly reduce the carbon burden of the cement industry. However, global scale usage requires a deep understanding of clay extraction and processing to optimize their reactivity. This paper focuses on the production and technology of calcined clays, presents an overview of clay mining, and discusses the energetics and carbon footprint of the calcination process. The article also presents an outlook on clay calcination and the technological advancements needed to meet future global demand for sustainable infrastructure.

Fly Ash Based Geopolymer Concrete: a Comprehensive Review

Avinash Ojha et al.

Summary: The production of ordinary Portland cement releases harmful greenhouse gases, while utilizing fly ash in geopolymer concrete presents a solution to environmental and disposal issues. Geopolymer concrete has a smaller carbon footprint compared to Portland cement concrete.

Sustainable construction via novel geopolymer composites incorporating waste plastic of different sizes and shapes

Georgy Lazorenko et al.

Summary: This research investigated the influence of shape and size of plastic waste on the properties of geopolymer mortars. The study found that smaller plastic aggregates improved the flowability and mechanical properties of the geopolymer mortars. However, the presence of PET particles resulted in lower compressive strength and splitting tensile strength due to poor interaction with the matrix. Enhancing the adhesion between PET particles and geopolymer mortars could potentially address this issue.

Potential Assessment of E-Waste Plastic in Metakaolin Based Geopolymer Using Petrography Image Analysis

Parth Verma et al.

Summary: This article discusses a study on metakaolin geopolymer concrete (MGPC) and crushed E-waste plastic (EWP). The study found that the molarity of MGPC is closely related to its performance, with higher molarity resulting in increased mechanical strength. Additionally, the optimum percentage of EWP in MGPC needs to be determined.

Influences of high temperature on mechanical properties of fly ash based geopolymer mortars reinforced with PVA fiber

Mehmet Kaya et al.

Summary: This study produced a geopolymer composite with PVA fiber to recycle waste fly ash and obtain an eco-friendly binder. The addition of PVA fiber in geopolymer mortars increased compressive strength under high temperature, but the melting of PVA fibers resulted in strength loss.

Effect of PVA fiber on mechanical properties of fly ash-based geopolymer concrete

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of PVA fiber content on the mechanical and fracture properties of GPC, finding significant improvements in compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, peak load, critical effective crack lengths, fracture toughness, and fracture energy. Optimal reinforcement of these properties was observed at 0.8% PVA fiber content.
