Trans-Contextual Model Predicting Change in Out-of-School Physical Activity: A One-Year Longitudinal Study

Hanna Kalajas-Tilga et al.

Summary: This study aimed to test the long-term predictive validity of the trans-contextual model in adolescents' out-of-school physical activity. Results showed that perceived autonomy support from PE teachers predicted autonomous motivation in PE, which then predicted autonomous motivation in leisure-time. Peer and parent autonomy support also predicted autonomous motivation in leisure-time. Autonomous motivation in leisure-time indirectly predicted physical activity intention mediated by attitude and perceived behavioural control. Intention predicted self-reported physical activity participation, though in the opposite direction to prediction. Further longitudinal studies are needed to verify these results.

Pathways to Alternative Transport Mode Choices among University Students and Staff-Commuting to the University of Maribor since 2010

Branka Trcek et al.

Summary: The study conducted at the University of Maribor focused on commuting behavior, particularly at the four technical faculties. The research analyzed questionnaire surveys and transport policies implemented from 2010 to 2020. The findings revealed a shift towards active commuting among students and a decrease in car use. Gender differences were observed, with female students more likely to walk and male students more likely to cycle or drive. Staff commuting patterns remained unchanged, with no significant gender difference. The mode shifts were influenced by trip origins, bus subsidies, parking availability, and fees. The study emphasized the importance of coordinating transport policies with housing policies for more effective results.

Physical activity information seeking among emerging adults attending university

Elaine M. Ori et al.

Summary: This study examined the preferred sources of information for seeking physical activity (PA) among university students and how this information seeking contributed to their participation in a campus PA program. The findings revealed that students mainly relied on the internet and friends for PA information, with females focusing on weight loss and males focusing on muscle gain. Additionally, the study found that females, domestic students, and first-year students were more likely to participate in the campus PA program, and health reasons significantly influenced participation.

Environmental and Psychosocial Barriers Affect the Active Commuting to University in Chilean Students

Antonio Castillo-Paredes et al.

Summary: The study identified that women were faced with more barriers to passive commuting, such as requiring too much planning, time, and physical effort. On the other hand, men's main barriers were needing too much time, planning, and encountering traffic congestion along the route. Both sexes demonstrated psychosocial barriers to active commuting.

New Self-Report Measures of Commuting Behaviors to University and Their Association with Sociodemographic Characteristics

Ximena Palma-Leal et al.

Summary: The study found that there are gender differences in commuting patterns, activity levels, and related factors among university students. Older students, those living in university residences, belonging to low socioeconomic levels and attending public universities were more likely to choose active commuting methods.

Summary: The study found that engaging in more moderate-intensity transportation physical activity during younger and middle adulthood is associated with less white matter hyperintensities in middle and older adulthood, potentially reducing the risk of dementia.
