Antibiotics, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and resistance genes in aquaculture: risks, current concern, and future thinking

Anwar Hossain et al.

Summary: Aquaculture is a highly promising industry, but the use of antibiotics and the transmission of resistant genes in the aquatic environment may have adverse effects on human and animal health. Data related to antibiotic usage and bacterial resistance in aquaculture is limited in major aquaculture-producing countries. Global efforts should be made to monitor antibiotic concentration, assess the risks associated with resistant bacteria, and establish regulations for antibiotic use in fish and shellfish farming.

Usage pattern of chemicals, biologicals and veterinary medicinal products in Indian aquaculture

Prasanna K. Patil et al.

Summary: The use of chemicals, biologicals, and veterinary medicinal products is essential for healthy and sustainable fish production. A nationwide survey revealed that farmers rely on various inputs such as disinfectants, nutritional supplements, and environmental modifiers to improve soil and water quality, enhance growth, and ensure biosecurity. The survey also indicated that education and farming experience significantly influence the usage pattern of aquaculture inputs.

Effect of papaya (Carica papaya) leaf extract as dietary growth promoter supplement in red hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus x Oreochromis niloticus) diet

Noor Khalidah Abdul Hamid et al.

Summary: The purpose of this experiment was to examine the potential use of Carica papaya leaf extract as a supplement to promote growth and improve feed utilization in red hybrid tilapia. Results showed that adding 1% to 2% of papaya leaf extract to the diets improved growth and feed efficiency of the red hybrid tilapia without adversely affecting blood parameters.

Status of disease prevalence, drugs and antibiotics usage in pond-based aquaculture at Narsingdi district, Bangladesh: A major public health concern and strategic appraisal for mitigation

Md. Abu Kawsar et al.

Summary: This research investigates the disease prevalence and usage of aqua drugs in aquaculture operations in the Narsingdi region of Bangladesh. It reveals that mixed cultures of carp, tilapia, and pangas are commonly practiced, and diseases such as epizootic ulcerative syndrome and saprolegniasis are prevalent in the area. The study also highlights farmers' lack of knowledge about the proper use of aqua chemicals and the potential health risks associated with their misuse.

The functionality of probiotics in aquaculture: An overview

Mohamed T. El-Saadony et al.

Summary: Probiotics are beneficial live bacteria introduced into the gastrointestinal tract through food or water, enhancing microbial balance and inhibiting harmful pathogens. In aquaculture, they play a crucial role in improving fish growth, disease resistance, and water quality, with potential applications in feed additives to boost fish production and safeguard human health.

Pesticides contamination in the Thamirabarani, a perennial river in peninsular India: The first report on ecotoxicological and human health risk assessment

Ulaganathan Arisekar et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the distribution of pesticides and assesses the associated ecological and human health risks in the Thamirabarani River in Tamil Nadu, India. Results indicate that while pesticides in the water and sediments pose no ecological hazard to aquatic organisms, human exposure through ingestion and dermal contact may increase cancer risks.

Increasing disease burden and use of drugs and chemicals in Bangladesh shrimp aquaculture: A potential menace to human health

Richard D. Heal et al.

Summary: The study found that disease burden in Bangladesh shrimp farms has been increasing year by year, along with a significant rise in the use of chemical treatments. Farmers reported physical deformities, nutritional deficiencies, and unknown diseases in shrimp stock. Further research is needed to identify potential risks from residues of chemical products.

Effects of dietary Papaveraceae extract on growth, feeding response, nutritional quality and serum biochemical indices of striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus)

Neaz A. Hasan et al.

Summary: The study found that incorporating Papaveraceae extracts (PE) into the diet of striped catfish can significantly improve growth performance, digestion, feed utilization, and feed conversion rate, while also having no significant impact on fish body composition and product quality. A dosage of 0.35 g/kg of PE is considered a safe and economically viable option for commercial pangasius farming, although higher doses may be needed for therapeutic action against Aeromonas hydrophila.

Emerging contaminants detected in aquaculture sites in Java, Indonesia

Nuning Vita Hidayati et al.

Summary: Pharmaceuticals of emerging concern, including ACM, TMP, OTC, and SMX, were detected in water samples from aquaculture environments and nonaquaculture sites in four regions on the northern coast of Central Java. OTC was the most ubiquitous antibiotic, presenting high health risks to algae and posing a significant concern as an emerging contaminant. More attention and sustainable management planning are needed for shrimp farms in the northern part of Central Java.
