Carcass characteristics and meat evaluation of cattle finished in temperate pasture and supplemented with natural additive containing clove, cashew oil, castor oils, and a microencapsulated blend of eugenol, thymol, and vanillin

Camila Mottin et al.

Summary: The study showed that supplementing crossbred steers with a natural additive blend did not affect carcass characteristics but did impact body composition, cooking losses, and thawing/aging losses. The blend has the potential to improve meat quality, but the doses should be adjusted accordingly.

Assessment of limiting dietary amino acids in broiler chickens offered reduced crude protein diets

Craig W. Maynard et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of individual amino acid deletions on the growth performance, carcass traits, and nutrient utilization of poultry. The results showed that certain amino acid deficiencies had negative impacts on performance and carcass traits of the birds, with Val and Arg being co-limiting in wheat-soybean meal diets.

Dietary fiber concentrates recovered from agro-industrial by-products: Functional properties and application as physical carriers for probiotics

Caian He et al.

Summary: The ethanol-washing method to obtain alcohol-insoluble residues (AIRs) from agro-industrial by-products allows for the recovery of nutritional dietary fiber with good absorption and antioxidant capacities. Different AIRs exhibit variations in water and oil holding capacity as well as protein absorption capacity, showing protective effects on probiotics. Among the sources of AIRs, the one from clementine peel performs better in improving the viability of probiotic cells after heat shock than others.

Assessment of Food By-Products' Potential for Simultaneous Binding of Aflatoxin B1 and Zearalenone

Laurentiu Mihai Palade et al.

Summary: This study found that grape seed meal (GSM) and seabuckthorn meal (SBM) exhibited the most promising binding capacity for AFB1 and ZEA among eight food-derived by-products investigated as biosorbent approaches. The optimal settings for experimental factors and different specificity for the binary-mycotoxin system were also determined. Overall, GSM showed higher binding capacity compared to SBM, suggesting that they are viable alternatives to commercial biosorbent products.

Optimum grape pomace proportion in feedlot cattle diets: ruminal fermentation, total tract nutrient digestibility, nitrogen utilization, and blood metabolites

James R. Vinyard et al.

Summary: The study investigated the optimal proportion of grape pomace (GP) in finishing cattle diets, finding that a dietary inclusion level beyond 15% might compromise nutrient supply and growth performance. Responses to dietary GP proportion were mostly quadratic, indicating potential compromised nutrient supply.

Venicio Macedo Carvalho et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of a mixture of plant extracts and essential oils on the performance and digestibility of beef cattle in feedlot conditions. The results showed that supplementation with the mixture improved nutrient digestibility and ruminal fermentation, indicating potential as a feed additive for enhancing animal performance.

Defined shear and heat treatment of apple pomace: impact on dietary fiber structures and functional properties

Vera Schmid et al.

Summary: Extrusion processing can modify food by-products, with thermal stress having a greater impact on dietary fiber composition and polysaccharide structures than mechanical stress. High temperatures increase soluble fiber contents while decreasing insoluble fiber contents, leading to changes in functional properties such as water solubility and absorption index. Arabinans and galacturonic acid containing pectic polysaccharides are identified as the most susceptible to degradation under these conditions, indicating the importance of temperature control in food processing.

Doriana Eurosia Angela Tedesco et al.

Summary: Fruits and vegetables are the most wasted food categories, with their waste being used in animal feed to enhance sustainability of livestock production. Analysis of fruit and vegetable waste from the Milan General Wholesale Market revealed rich nutritional value but high moisture content, necessitating the development of technologies to maintain food safety along the supply chain.

Summary: The study showed that adding oil-rich feedstuffs in diets for lactating goats significantly alters the fatty acid profile of their milk, decreasing saturated fatty acid content and increasing unsaturated fatty acid content. The effects on polyunsaturated fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid, and the n-6 to n-3 ratio depend on the source of dietary lipids.
