The effects of pH on the production of volatile fatty acids and microbial dynamics in long-term reactor operation

Merve Atasoy et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of pH on the production, composition of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and bacterial community structure. The results showed that acidic pH improved VFA production yield, and different pH conditions resulted in different acid compositions. The adaptation of bacterial community to pH conditions also affected the composition of acid products.

Effect of initial pH and substrate concentration on the lactic acid production from cassava wastewater fermentation by an enriched culture of acidogenic microorganisms

Douglas B. da Silva et al.

Summary: Cassava processing wastewater has emerged as a promising substrate for lactic acid production due to its high carbohydrate content. The study conducted batch reactor trials using enriched acidogenic microorganisms to ferment non-sterilized cassava wastewater, resulting in optimal lactic acid yields under specific pH and substrate concentration conditions.

Polyhydroxyalkanoate production using enriched biomass and acidogenic fermentation products of dairy wastewater and organic food waste

Selin Karaca et al.

Summary: The study optimized the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) using acidified dairy wastewater (DW) and organic food waste (OFW) as substrate sources. Results showed that the highest acidification yields were obtained with an S/I ratio of 10. Using volatile fatty acids (VFA) obtained from acidified DW and OFW led to high PHA contents. The study demonstrated significant profits could be achieved through acidification of large quantities of DW and OFW.
