Effects of biomimetic cross-sectional morphology on the piezoelectric properties of BaTiO3 nanorods-contained PVDF fibers

Young Kwang Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of component morphology on the performance of a piezoelectric nanogenerator. It was found that the cross-sectional morphology of the PVDF fiber significantly influenced the piezoelectric performance, with the daffodil flower-shaped PVDF fiber exhibiting the best performance. The morphology of the BaTiO3 component (nanoparticles and nanorods) was also found to affect the performance of the nanogenerator, with the nanorod morphology showing excellent performance.

Two antagonistic effects of flow/mixing on reactive polymer blending

Wei-Yun Ji et al.

Summary: This study reveals that in reactive polymer blending, flow/mixing can both promote copolymer formation by creating interfaces and enhance collisions between reactive groups, as well as potentially pull the copolymer out of the interfaces and migrate it to one of the two polymer components of the blend, reducing its compatibilization efficiency.

A poling-free PVDF nanocomposite via mechanically directional stress field for self-powered pressure sensor application

Xiaoting Yuan et al.

Summary: This study reports a PVDF-polymer nanocomposite doped with (Pb, Zr)TiO3 (PZT) particles, which exhibits a large poling-free piezoelectric (PFP) effect after experiencing mechanically directional stress field (MDSF). The MDSF activates a crystal phase transformation from disordered star-shape nanocrystals to ordered, self-poled chain-shape nanocrystalline fibers, confirming the existence of polarization. Furthermore, a 3D-printed pressure sensor demonstrates high sensitivity and power density.

Enhancing output performance of PVDF-HFP fiber-based nanogenerator by hybridizing silver nanowires and perovskite oxide nanocrystals

Yilin He et al.

Summary: This work presents a new approach for hybridizing nano-scale materials to create Schottky junctions and enhance the electrical output of flexible triboelectric nanogenerators. By introducing a combination of conductive silver nanowires and perovskite oxide Mn-doped nanocrystals into the electrospun nanofibers, a significant increase in output power was achieved.

Oxygen vacancy-induced hydroxyl dipole reorientation in hydroxyapatite for enhanced piezocatalytic activity

Ye Miao et al.

Summary: A new method is proposed to enhance the piezocatalytic activity of hydroxyapatite by introducing oxygen vacancies to align the orientation of hydroxyl dipoles. Hydroxyapatite with a moderate oxygen-vacancy concentration showed excellent catalytic efficiency in removing bisphenol A and had a degradation rate almost four times higher than pristine HAP. This work provides a novel strategy for improving the piezocatalytic performance of HAP and expands its application in environmental remediation by harvesting mechanical energy.

Effects of annealing time on physical and mechanical properties of PVDF microporous membranes by a melt extrusion-stretching process

Shulin Men et al.

Summary: Polyvinylidene fluoride-based separators for secondary battery have been extensively studied using a melt extrusion-stretching (MES) process to prepare high performance PVDF microporous membranes. The use of a blend of different molecular weight PVDF grades and annealing treatment led to a preferable crystalline structure for stretching, resulting in a PVDF membrane with high porosity and superior tensile strength. Interestingly, the increase of beta phase content during stretching was insignificant, indicating that the formation of micropores/microfibrils in the stretching process played a key role in stress relaxation and less crystalline structure conversion.
