Cortical Correlates of Gait Compensation Strategies in Parkinson Disease

Anouk Tosserams et al.

Summary: Gait impairment is a common problem in individuals with Parkinson's disease, and finding effective compensation strategies is crucial for rehabilitation. This study used EEG to investigate the cortical correlates of three different strategies: external cueing, internal cueing, and action observation. The results demonstrated that all three strategies induced changes in cortical activity, suggesting that different compensation strategies rely on different cortical mechanisms to achieve enhanced central motor activation.

Evolution of and Disparity among Biomimetic Superhydrophobic Surfaces with Gecko, Petal, and Lotus Effect

Wei Weng et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the transformation of one type of superhydrophobic surfaces to another by changing surface topography alone, resulting in solid surfaces with tunable properties. The different surfaces, featuring gecko, petal, and lotus effects, were achieved by adjusting the roughness factor and length scale of roughness, while maintaining the same surface chemistry. The study investigates the behavior of water droplets on these surfaces, revealing similarities in spreading but differences in sliding, receding, jetting, and rebounding due to the variations in adhesive properties. The research also provides explanations for the different behaviors based on existing equations for surfaces with petal and lotus effects, while the surface with gecko effect is attributed to negative pressure generated by sealed air within its structure.

Functional Connectivity of Vermis Correlates with Future Gait Impairments in Parkinson's Disease

Baijayanta Maiti et al.

Summary: The study found that Parkinson's disease patients have significantly altered functional connectivity between the vermis and sensorimotor cortex, which is correlated with subsequent impairment in specific domains of gait. These results indicate the potential of altered vermal functional connectivity as a novel imaging biomarker for gait impairment in Parkinson's disease.

Phenotypic manifestation of α-synuclein strains derived from Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy in human dopaminergic neurons

Benedict Tanudjojo et al.

Summary: Alpha-synuclein plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease and related disorders, causing degeneration of human dopaminergic neurons. The toxicity of alpha-synuclein strains depends on aggregate burden, determined by monomer levels and conformation, and influenced by differential interactomes. Parkinson's disease-associated genes influence the phenotypic manifestation of strains in human neurons.

Carbohydrate-protein interactions studied by solid-liquid contact electrification and its use for label-free bacterial detection

Yu-Ping Pao et al.

Summary: This study developed a self-powered and label-free nanosensor for rapid detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli) using surface engineered nanoparticles and solid-liquid contact electrification. The sensor showed selective and sensitive detection towards E. coli by enhancing output voltage through decreasing the work function of the solid triboelectric sensing layer. The developed triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) has a wide detection range from 2 x 104 to 2 x 107 CFU/ml with a limit of detection (LOD) of 4 x 103 CFU/ml, highlighting its potential for label-free and rapid analysis of pathogenic microorganisms.
