Simultaneous strength and ductility enhancements of high thermal conductive Ag7.5Cu alloy by selective laser melting

Wei Xiong et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that by applying multi-scale synergies to Ag7.5Cu alloy, a significant enhancement in yield strength and ductility was achieved without post-treatment. This approach breaks the strength-ductility trade-off of conventional SLM alloys and showcases a unique strategy that leverages high thermal conductivity and internal stresses.

Study on Interfacial Bonding Properties of NiTi/CuSn10 Dissimilar Materials by Selective Laser Melting

Changhui Song et al.

Summary: The study explores the bonding of NiTi alloy with shape memory effect and CuSn10 alloy with good ductility, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity using selective laser melting. By forming interlayers with different SLM process parameters, the study found columnar grain and refined grains in the interfacial region, as well as good diffusion of elements. The analysis showed that the strengthening of the interfacial bonding can be achieved through the presence of columnar grain, refined grains, and Ni4Ti3 phase at the interface.

Physical and chemical properties of Ag-Cu composite electrical contacts prepared by cold-press and sintering of silver-coated copper powder

Z. Mousavi et al.

Summary: The effects of silver content, sintering temperature, sintering time, and compaction pressure on the properties of contacts were studied. It was found that increasing the silver content and the time and temperature of the sintering process increased the oxidation of copper. Galvanic corrosion and the Kirkendall effect between copper and silver resulted in the formation of microvoids around copper particles, facilitating the copper oxidation. The apparent bulk density remained relatively constant with increasing sintering temperature up to 700 degrees C, but decreased sharply at higher temperatures. Increasing the sintering time up to 60 minutes increased the apparent bulk density, while longer times decreased it. Compaction pressure did not significantly affect the apparent bulk density.

Multi-scale defects in powder-based additively manufactured metals and alloys

J. Fu et al.

Summary: This review paper addresses the formation, influence, and control of defects in powder-based metal additive manufacturing (AM). It classifies the defects into three categories: geometry-related, surface integrity-related, and microstructural defects, and discusses their root causes and influencing factors. The paper also introduces detection methods and modeling for these defects, and reviews their effects on the mechanical properties of AMed metallic components. Various control and mitigation methods are summarized and discussed. The research gaps and future prospects of the multi-scale AM defects are identified.

John Robinson et al.

Summary: In this study, copper-silver structures with varying silver content were fabricated using in situ alloying and Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) Additive Manufacturing (AM). Various analyses including SEM, XCT and XRD were conducted to study the morphology, distribution, elemental analysis, pore defects, atomic crystal structure, and mechanical properties of the CuAg alloys. Results showed that increasing silver content reduced pore defects and size, while annealing process increased porosity and improved mechanical properties.

Vaporization of alloying elements and explosion behavior during laser powder bed fusion of Cu-10Zn alloy

Jie Yin et al.

Summary: The vaporization of alloying elements during laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) has a significant effect on the chemical composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties, especially in materials containing volatile elements. In this study, a new defect formation mechanism called explosion-induced crater was identified, which can be mitigated by increasing the lifetime of the molten pool to improve forming quality. The research provides a scientific basis for achieving stable forming with fewer defects in LPBF of difficult-to-form materials.
