Modeling polymer-metal frictional interface using multi-asperity contact theory

Hossein Jamshidi et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a frictional contact model of a hard rough surface on an elastic substrate using the multi-asperity contact theory considering the effect of the elastic substrate deformation on the friction coefficient. The developed contact model is characterized by physical parameters to simulate pre-slip and slide state motion. Parameters of the proposed model are physically meaningful and can be determined analytically or experimentally.

An Isogeometric analysis based method for frictional elastic contact problems with randomly rough surfaces

Han Hu et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the issue of frictional contact between an elastomer and a rigid body with randomly rough surfaces. The research is based on a framework for generating random geometries and a robust frictional contact algorithm, both realized through the approach of Isogeometric analysis (IGA). Numerical experiments show that factors such as the roughness and correlation length of the random surface, as well as the external traction, have a significant influence on the ratios characterizing the frictional contact.

A fractal contact model of rough surfaces considering detailed multi-scale effects

Jian Chen et al.

Summary: A fractal contact model was proposed to study the dynamic contact performance of engineering surfaces, considering the scale-dependence of critical contact parameters. The study found that the scale of asperities in the lowest ten grades significantly affects the contact characteristics of the entire joint surface. Changes in topography and material properties can influence the contact characteristics.

Multi-stage contact model between fractal rough surfaces based on multi-scale asperity deformation

Xin Yu et al.

Summary: A novel multi-stage contact model of fractal rough surfaces is proposed in this paper. The contact behavior of the whole surface is distinguished into five stages based on the deformation modes of multi-scale asperities. The relationship between contact force, normal stiffness, and real contact area under the effects of fractal factors is analyzed, and the developed model is compared with other models and experimental data.

Nano-sized single-asperity friction behavior: Insight from molecular dynamics simulations

Wenzhen Xie et al.

Summary: Friction plays a crucial role in contact pairs at different scales, but nano-sized friction behavior differs from macroscopic behavior. The study found that multi-slip phenomenon occurs during the tangential loading of a single nano-sized asperity, and existing macroscopic friction models need to be modified to accurately describe nano-sized friction. The plastic deformation mechanism and the size effect of asperities also need to be considered.

A multiscale soft-contact modelling method for rough surfaces in contact with coupled slipping/sliding and rolling

Chuhan Wu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a multiscale soft-contact modelling method for characterizing rough surfaces in contact with coupled slipping/sliding and rolling. The method accommodates the microscale flattening of random surface asperities subjected to a plastically deformed substrate through a statistical analysis and dynamic explicit finite element analysis. A soft-contact algorithm is developed to effectively treat the cross-scale deformation of microscopic asperities and the macroscopic body. The modeling method is validated by a typical metal forming process, cold rolling of metal strips.

Chao Peng et al.

Summary: In this work, the size effects in spherical contact were investigated using a modified couple stress elasticity theory. A model to describe the stiffening effects of couple stress on contact load and the modulus model for size effects in spherical contact tests were proposed. The validity of the modulus model was demonstrated by comparing model results with experimental data.

A novel multiscale model for contact behavior analysis of rough surfaces with the statistical approach

Hehe Kang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a contact model for rough interfaces with multiscale topographies, considering the coupling effect of macroscopic profile deviation and mesoscopic roughness. The model combines macro-, meso-, and microscopic topographies to establish a multiscale normal contact model, and uses the Jenkins element to express slip-stick behavior in the tangential model. Experimental validation and comparison with finite element models demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model for studying contact responses in rough interfaces with multiscale topographies.
