Maximal strengths of dielectric elastomer fingers for a passive grip

Fa-Yi Chen et al.

Summary: Dielectric elastomer minimum energy structures (DEMESs) are used as low-force robotic grippers, capable of sweeping a large angle but with low load capacity. By mimicking the design of the human thumb, the optimized DE finger achieves stronger lift strength and pull strength. The optimized DEMES grippers can carry a payload exceeding their lift strength.

Designing Soft Mobile Machines Enabled by Dielectric Elastomer Minimum Energy Structures

Fan Liu et al.

Summary: Dielectric elastomers are ideal electro-active polymers for designing soft machines with large deformation. This study reports the implementation of soft mobile machines using the design of dielectric elastomer minimum energy structures (DEMES), finite element simulation, and experiments. The findings enrich the design of DE devices and provide valuable insights for soft machines using other soft-active materials.

Flexible and stable grasping by multi-jointed pneumatic actuator mimicking the human finger-impacts of structural parameters on performance

Tianze Hao et al.

Summary: This paper presents a flexible pneumatic actuator with a three-chamber structure to mimic the motion of a human finger. By independently driving each chamber with pressurized air sources and using the finite element method to optimize structural parameters, the actuator is able to grasp objects according to their shapes. Experimentally investigated bending performance and a three-finger gripper demonstrate the actuator's flexibility and stability in grasping various objects.

Viscoelasticity Modeling of Dielectric Elastomers by Kelvin Voigt-Generalized Maxwell Model

TuanDung Nguyen et al.

Summary: Dielectric elastomers, consisting of polymer chains connected by covalent cross-links, demonstrate large displacement outputs due to nonlinear electromechanical coupling and time-dependent viscoelastic behavior. A proposed nonlinear rheological model combines the Kelvin-Voigt and generalized Maxwell models to describe the viscoelasticity of DEs, with the addition of a Monte Carlo simulation method for improved accuracy. The model successfully predicts DE deformation processes under different voltage excitations, providing theoretical guidance for viscoelastic DEA design.
