Comparing the Gettering Effect of Heavily Doped Polysilicon Films and Its Implications for Tunnel Oxide-Passivated Contact Solar Cells

Zhongshu Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the gettering strength of phosphorus- or boron-doped polysilicon films from different fabrication techniques is assessed and compared. The impact of different polysilicon gettering effects on the efficiency of tunnel oxide-passivated contact (TOPCon) cells is also simulated and discussed. The results show that phosphorus-doped polysilicon films have similar segregation coefficients, while the gettering effects of boron-doped polysilicon films vary significantly.

Gettering in PolySi/SiOx Passivating Contacts Enables Si-Based Tandem Solar Cells with High Thermal and Contamination Resilience

Alireza Assar et al.

Summary: Multijunction solar cells in a tandem configuration using crystalline silicon as the bottom cell can reduce electricity costs. However, only a limited number of top and bottom cell architectures are compatible for direct integration on silicon. By using polySi/SiOx passivating contacts, degradation can be minimized and the lifetime of the bottom cell can be increased. Applying this concept to low-cost top cell chalcogenides, the efficiency and resilience of the tandem solar cells can be improved.

X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Resonant X-ray Spectroscopy Investigations of Interactions between Thin Metal Catalyst Films and Amorphous Titanium Dioxide Photoelectrode Protection Layers

Matthias H. Richter et al.

Summary: The use of electrochemistry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and resonant X-ray spectroscopy has revealed that while iridium (Ir) and nickel (Ni) electrocatalysts for the oxygen-evolution reaction have similar overpotentials in alkaline media, the interfaces with a-TiO2 exhibit different behaviors. Nickel (Ni) and iridium (Ir) both cause band bending in a-TiO2 for hole conduction, while gold (Au) produces a flat-band interface that limits hole conduction without introducing new band gap states.
