Nanomorphology dependence of the environmental stability of organic solar cells

Woong Sung et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of nanomorphologies of small-molecule acceptors on the environmental stability of polymer:small-molecule blends, revealing that dispersed small-molecule acceptors in a mixed phase are critical for causing photooxidation of the polymer. Conversely, an aggregated small-molecule acceptor phase stabilizes the polymer by reducing the formation of triplet excitons. The photooxidation of the polymer substantially degrades hole transport in the blends, leading to efficiency losses in organic solar cells.

Recent Advances in Nonfullerene Acceptor-Based Layer-by-Layer Organic Solar Cells Using a Solution Process

Min Hun Jee et al.

Summary: Sequential layer-by-layer organic solar cells have attracted attention due to their potential for high power conversion efficiencies and their ability to optimize structure and performance. The longer exciton diffusion length of nonfullerene acceptors provides a new direction for improving the performance of these solar cells. However, challenges remain in large-scale production and device stability.

Machine learning prediction of glass transition temperature of conjugated polymers from chemical structure

Amirhadi Alesadi et al.

Summary: We report a predictive modeling framework to predict the glass transition temperature (Tg) of conjugated polymers (CPs) using machine learning (ML), molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and experiments. Based on 154 collected Tg data, an ML model is developed using simplified geometry of six chemical building blocks as molecular features. The dominant features for Tg are identified as side-chain fraction, isolated rings, fused rings, and bridged rings. MD simulations provide insights into the fundamental roles of these chemical building blocks in dynamical heterogeneity and local mobility of CPs. The developed ML model demonstrates its capability in predicting Tg of new high-performance solar cell materials. This predictive framework facilitates the design and prediction of Tg of complex CPs, addressing stability issues in the field of organic electronics.

Temperature and Light Modulated Open-Circuit Voltage in Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells with Different Effective Bandgaps

Viktor V. Brus et al.

Summary: The relationship between the temperature-light intensity dependence of open-circuit voltage V-oc in nonfullerene-based organic solar cells and the material characteristics and multimechanism recombination parameters was investigated. By systematically varying the effective bandgap E-g, E-eff and the electrode layers, different contributions of bimolecular, bulk, and surface trap-assisted recombination mechanisms were observed. The analytical model and voltage-impedance spectroscopy technique provide a useful tool to quantify multimechanism recombination parameters, effective density of states N-c, and energetic disorder sigma in organic solar cells under operating conditions. The proposed model's validity in understanding the temperature and light intensity dependence of V-oc was demonstrated by applying it to four different donor:nonfullerene acceptor blend systems with conventional or inverted device architectures.

A unified description of non-radiative voltage losses in organic solar cells

Xian-Kai Chen et al.

Summary: Researchers provide a general description of non-radiative voltage losses and find that the latest organic solar cells based on non-fullerene acceptors can reduce this loss. The study shows that photoluminescence yield is a critical factor in determining the lower limit of non-radiative voltage losses.
